Install PureMessage on Exchange 2003

Hello,

I'm new to Sophos and PureMessage and would like to install it on our Front and Back End Exchg 2003 servers with SQL Express local databases on them. The BackEnd server does not have a connection to the Internet, but can talk to the Sophos Enterprise Console machine. I read in the documentation that I can setup an Updating policy so my back-end machine can get updates from the Enterprise console machine for both Anti-virus and Spam. Is that correct? The reason I ask is because I talked to a Sophos tech and he mentioned that to get SPAM rules, the back-end machine needs to be connected to the Internet. To me that doesn't seem correct so I wanted to get another opinion here.

The tech also mentioned that I cannot manage PureMessage on both of those machines from a single machine. Is that true as well?

My second question is: I haven't installed Sophos AV on my backend machine yet, however, if I download the "Anti-virus and Anti-Spam" file rather than just the "Anti-Virus" off my account, can I still configure it to be manged?

My last question - Is the PureMessage AV different from the Sophos Endpoint AV ? Can I not just install the SEP on it and then install PureMessage?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi,

    To answer your questions:

1a) Spam rules must be downloaded from the internet as they are only available from one of our web servers. If you have a firewall blocking internet access, you would need to allow access to two sites, as per Sophos Knowledge article 29452: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/29452.html

1b) If the two PureMessage installations are not sharing the same SQL instance (meaning that they have their own SQL server installed locally), then it would be tricky, though not impossible, to manage each policy from the same console. If the two installations share the same SQL instance, then the policy would be shared and it would be possible to manage both servers from the same console.

The trickiness stems from configuring the console in a way to not always look at the default running service on that Exchange server. Another route would be to install the console on a third machine and then toggle which server to look at upon startup. However, if the policies are going to be identical, then it's best to share the SQL instance.

    2) Downloading either the AV-only version or the antivirus/antispam version of PureMessage for Exchange will include SAV as part of the bundle, so PureMessage can be installed without having SAV already installed.

    3) There is one difference between the SAV that is bundled with PureMessage and the one that you either download separately or push out from Enterprise Console: the Exchange-level exclusions are already included in the PureMessage version. However, it is easy to setup a separate policy within Enterprise Console to handle the exceptions, along with adding the secondary server information to pull spam definitions: please consult Sophos KBA 40065 on how to do this: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/40065.html

  • GaryK, thank you very much for your reply.

So, if I were to install PureMessage on my internal Exchange Server (not connected to Internet), can I have it get AV updates and Spam updates from my Enterprise Console that is connected to the Internet?

Thanks again for all your help!
