how does web protection work?

I have a few questions about the web protection feature, I think I’ve found most of the answers but want to clarify.
I am using the new Sophos UTM 9.
Is the URL database hosted locally and  get updates with pattern files or does every request go to a cloud service for categorization? --Cloud Service

If it is a cloud service wouldn’t that impact performance? Isn’t this a big privacy concern, every url going to another third party, in addition to your ISP, DNS etc? --Sometimes it does impact performance if your ISP connection is saturated, or has a lot of latency to the categorization servers.  There is a undocumented way to enable a local content filter DB, just search for the instructions on this forum.  Only URLs with "new" domain names are sent, that is, when you go to, say, Yahoo! Deutschland the first time for the day, the content filter does a lookup... if you log into an account on yahoo.com, that traffic is normally not sent to the content filter DB, as the URL would already be locally cached.

Is trusted source smart filter xl still the categorization service? It seems odd the Sophos would use a competitors service. --Yes, as of this version, they are still using the TrustedSource system; this is inherited from when it was an Astaro product, and Astaro did not have their own URL Filtering DBs.... I imagine at some point this will change, as you have pointed out, they (Sophos) do have their own URL Filtering DBs

Is this a url / reputation filter only, or does it look at the content of each page for inappropriate content / phrases? --URL/Reputation Filter Only, with AV Scanning for Malware.
