try adding more ram...if the machine runs out of ram it'll bomb on tasks like that. you'll need to put in at least 4 gigs total i would go with 6 if you want to scan archives that large.
You probably have 'block unscannable content' enabled?
This is just me guessing, I have no information that the following is correct:
Most likely the AV scanner has an internal limit on how far it will extract an archive to scan its contents. This has nothing to do with the max scanning size. An AV-scanner cannot extract an archive endlessly, because this might DOS the computer (see Zip bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). An archive which hits these limits doesn't necessary need a large file size, the good old 42.zip is just 42kb large.

I've seen this before...you don't have enough ram to support the uncompressed file the scanner will bomb. Your best bet is two either jam more ram into the box or reduce the max file scanning size to under 400 megs
