Big performance problems with 8.201!!!

Hi Astaro,

we are using astaro gateway on dell boxes since many years with good results.

The last update from 7.5.11  to 8.201 gives us awful results. The webfilter (former known as web-proxy) is slow as in times of our modems.

Many websites needs minutes to load (Nachrichten - Service - Shopping bei t-online.de e.g.). Websites from our customers with logins doesn't run anymore! We have installed also the last point patch for 8.201 - no change in performance!!

We have switched off virus-scanning - no change
We have tried  transparent proxy - no change

What's wrong? Is there an update coming within days?

Yes. Please either revert to v8.103 and wait until v8.202 is GA or install the v8.202 Soft-Release U2D from our FTP server: ftp://ftp.astaro.de/pub/Astaro_Security_Gateway/v8/up2date/u2d-sys-8.202.tgz.gpg

v8.202 contains *many* HTTP-Proxy fixes & performance improvements

but the "performance improvements" will only be compared to 8.200/201. Compared the the good and stable 8.103 you will probably not notice any improvement.
But it reads better...

Have you tried putting the content filter database into MEM? See here https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/55/t/44899. this gave us huge speed improvements.

I've followed the instruction there and now it rocks! Fortunately my astaro has 4 Gig ram.

Hello,

we also have big performance issues here with 8.201. I grabbed the Content Filtering database in 8.103 already with:

cc set http sc_local_db mem

and everything was snappy and fast. Now with 8.201 we've got many hangs when sending forms or accessing random websites. I checked with cc get http and the database is still in memory:

"sc_local_db" => "mem",

I really want to go back to 8.103. How can that be established? Or is it possible to manually apply the point patch and still be able to get subsequent updates through the up2date feature?

Hi,

1. downgrading to 8.103 would involve
a. re-installing from the 8.103 ISO
b. importing a backup from 8.103. A backup from 8.2 will not work.

2. If you manually install the 8.202 soft release, it wouldn't prevent you from future upgrades.
That said, you should always make sure you have a current backup before any upgrades or configuration changes.

Hi asc, you can apply the 8.202 up2date manually by grabbing it from our FTP. We'll likely release it as up2date "push" next week, but it's working great and available now.

Thanks for the hints, AngeloC and BarryG. I'm going to try 8.202 and if that doesn't work for us, I'll go back to 8.103 which ran great.
