Application Control (Skype, eg.) without any packet filter rules, ASG 8.2

Hi, 
I am quite new here and hope anyone could help.

I have activated the HTTP-Proxy and my network can access HTTP connections (transparent mode) without having any packet filter rules defined.

Application Control accepts all SKYPE connections.

But: SKYPE can only connect in case a packet filter rule “Network >> Web Surfing >> Any” is activated. 

Why do I  need the packet rule? In the case of FTP or HTTP, I don’t.

    In the case of full blown proxies, such as the http or ftp, hidden packet filter rules are automatically created to allow the proxies to function.

    Application Control is a new feature which is really designed more as a blocking feature supplement to other proxy services, than a means to allow.  From the in-line help:
    The Application Control functionality of ASG allows you to shape and block network traffic based on the type of traffic.


    FYI, many people use the socks proxy for skype.

    How do I define the socks proxy in Astaro? It's clear in Skype.

    Does it make sense to use both: Packet rules (Web Surfing) and HTTP-Proxy (transparent)? Am I right that in this case there can be traffic (e. g. NON-HTTP-Traffic) which can pass via the packet rules without getting e. g. virus checked by the HTTP-Proxy?

    WebAdmin>>Network Security>>Advanced>>SOCKS Proxy Tab.  In allowed Networks add the Internal(Network) object.  If you want, enable user authentication and add user accounts.

    In Skype, choose SOCKS5.  Host is the internal interface IP of your Astaro and Port 1080.  Configure authentication if you did so on the Astaro.
