7.501 HTTP proxy - throughput extremely slow

I just installed ASG Software version 7.501 on a P4 2.8ghz with 1GB RAM and two Realtek gigabit ethernet controllers for WAN and LAN. Everything else is working just fine.
I'm trying to utilize the transparent web proxy for AV scanning and caching, but with it on I am taking a tremendous speed hit.
With HTTP proxy off I get 26mbits down at TWC speedtest. With proxy on, I get 10. I've tried various combinations of settings for the proxy (turning off caching, disabling the access log, disabling AV scanning) but whenever the proxy is on, download speeds are slow. It's not only speedtests, but any download. No matter what I do, as soon as proxy is off, speeds go right back up to normal.
I've checked HW reports and CPU usage is never spiking above 40%, mostly its under 10%. (2 spikes to 40% in 12 hours and those were probably during upgrade and/or restarts)
Seems that my box should have plenty of power to sustain 20mbit downloads. Previously this box was working wonderfully with smoothwall. (came back to astaro after the home license chanages(thank you astaro!))
I can't be the only one here.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

    i've upgraded to 7.502 and downloaded a 1Gb iso from my server with firefox. without http proxy my download speed was 5,3Mb/sec, that's 42,3Mbit,  after that I've enabled the proxy and checked the speed again, 2,9Mb/sec 23,2 Mbit, that's 46 percent speed drop, so the update didn't solve the problem. i have a 3.2Ghz p4 with 1Gb ram i think it should be enough to handle more than 24Mbit traffic.

    checked with top, the httpproxy uses between 15 and 23 percent, overall cpu usage is between 25 and 40 percent

    That's sound strange.

    According to our experience, downloading large files, goes well.
    Our biggest issue was surfing into web pages.

    I hope any of Astaro guys could shed some lite about it.

    I did a test in and out of the proxy and found the same speed for the same file. (2nd test was out of the proxy and has a different file name, but is the same file.)
    File: 2008 SP 2

    My CPU usage was 3-5%.  I am using my built in NIC (RTL 8201 CL chip 10/100) on the motherboard for the Internet. My CPU is an AMD Athlon X2 5050e 2.6 GHz dual core.  I run 2 gigs of RAM. 

    I went with such a powerful setup due to my fear of the exact issue this thread is about. 

    How many users do you have on using the net when you do this test?  It might be that multiple files getting downloaded and "watched" by the proxy slow it down.  Maybe try doing it when it is just you? Just a thought.

    What are you downloading there?? It's big!

    I was using Firefox, but I doubt the browser matters much.  Is this a file I can test with? 

    Even though you are using a browser, is the site serving up FTP protocols? Try using an FTP program for this test.  FTP trough the browser might cause some speed issue?  Also, test your speed on the download link I used above.  That will give you and I a reasonably direct comparison. I do not have 50/5, nor are we on the same ISP or in the same location.  But at least it is the same source and file.

    it's not a real file, just for testing.  here you can find some more: Index of /testfiles/ . as you can see although there's ftp in the name of the site i'm connecting through http. i've tried your link but couldn't get past 900kb/sec so can't see the difference between the two proxy settings

    Do you have any QOS settings configured? I only ask because I was bit by that one.

    Hi All,
    I don't know about you all but i'm using http proxy and everything seems to work fine. However when i'm downloading something it doesn't download at the full capacity. I am not sure if this is a bug or if they deliberately used something like delay pools for this restriction but I like this restirction. It enables no single user to start a huge download and hog all the bandwidth.

    For those who are on 7.502 and still experiencing slow proxy performance, who has attempted contacting support and what was their response?  In our enviornment, we generally see acceptable performance until peak times.  When peak times come, the box appears to be taxed beyond its limits and effectively shuts down proxy or displays messages about "categorization failed" (in the logs) and displays "connection refused" to the end user.  Yet, the graphs for all resources (network, cpu, memory..) don't seem to indicate any type of issue.  Support claims its our ISP - yet, I can surf just fine outside the proxy and get acceptable speeds, even at peak times.  Anybody out there experiencing similar?
