7.501 HTTP proxy - throughput extremely slow

I just installed ASG Software version 7.501 on a P4 2.8ghz with 1GB RAM and two Realtek gigabit ethernet controllers for WAN and LAN. Everything else is working just fine.
I'm trying to utilize the transparent web proxy for AV scanning and caching, but with it on I am taking a tremendous speed hit.
With HTTP proxy off I get 26mbits down at TWC speedtest. With proxy on, I get 10. I've tried various combinations of settings for the proxy (turning off caching, disabling the access log, disabling AV scanning) but whenever the proxy is on, download speeds are slow. It's not only speedtests, but any download. No matter what I do, as soon as proxy is off, speeds go right back up to normal.
I've checked HW reports and CPU usage is never spiking above 40%, mostly its under 10%. (2 spikes to 40% in 12 hours and those were probably during upgrade and/or restarts)
Seems that my box should have plenty of power to sustain 20mbit downloads. Previously this box was working wonderfully with smoothwall. (came back to astaro after the home license chanages(thank you astaro!))
I can't be the only one here.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

    I used to try these web site for speed. 

    Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
    Speakeasy Speed Test
    MySpeed - Speed Test San Jose California USA

    What I saw on my Astaro v7.02 is that the speed is not stable. For example, sometimes the speed is pretty fast, but sometimes it is working just like no proxy. 

    I have evaluated several UTM products, and keep all records for features and speed so that's why I know how fast w/wo proxy. 

    My Astaro v7 is running on a server with 2 CPU (dual core)/4GB RAM and my laptop connected directly to LAN, and I used to test it at least 10 times so the testing should be reliable. Any idea why?

    Hi, I don't think those speed tests work well through proxies.

    Try loading a complex site such as CNN or MSN on one PC, and then on another PC. It should be much faster for the second PC if the proxy is caching.
    Some sites however set the page cache headers to 'private', so they won't be cached. You could check the headers or try multiple sites.

    I have noticed a substantial decrease in overall performance on both of my ASG's even with .02 installed.  My machine stats are in my sig.  Ah for the want of squid..highly tuneable..[:)]  Anywho...I think Astaro needs to "fix" the proxy again.

    For the last few days the CPU on my ASG box at home has been high 90's and the hard disk is thrashing.  The data area on the disk (according to the dashboard) is creeping up from it's usual 8% and any activitiy that goes through the ASG is slower than usual.

    I've had no option other than to reboot the ASG when this happens and this seems to cure it for 12+ hours or so, but then I can hear the disk thrashing again and see the CPU in the red.

    I've logged in through the command line and run top and seen the httpproxy process taking up large percentages of time and theres only me and the missus online - is there a problem that's just started to happen recently as it's not been a problem before?

    is it possible to login to your box when the proxy consumes so much CPU? I would like to check what he's doing.

    By all means.  I rebooted the system earlier today so expect it to kick in sometime this evening (if it holds true to form).  How do I provision you access to it? or is there some trace I can run for you?

    Hello,  
     I'm also noticing slower speeds for users who use the proxy.  Currently on a 10/10 connection.    Users on the proxy see the speed of 3.5up/3down, when a user outside the proxy will see 10up/10down.   Any thoughts?

    Carlos, someone posted recently that they solved their speed problem by unchecking 'Use forwarders assigned by ISP' on the 'Forwarders' tab of 'Network Services >> DNS'.  Could you try that and post your results?

    PS If you aren't already using OpenDNS, you might replace your ISP's forwarders with OpenDNS: 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222.

    I was using that configuration..still had problems.  I have changed things around..I have removed astaro from the dns chain...although the sites would not fail to resolve..they would fail to load..which means they would die during the http transactions..NOT during the dns transactions of the initial resolution of the site.
