This worked fine under v6.x but after upgrading to v7.101 a problem started to appear.
When Outlook tried to authenticate to Hotmail it failed with the message:
Task 'Hotmail: Folder:Inbox Downloading selected items.' reported error (0x800CCC33) : 'Access to the account was denied. Verify that your username and password are correct. The server responded 'Multi-Status'
Creating a new Packet Filter rule and disabling the HTTP Proxy allowed connectivity to Hotmail to function correctly so the problem was obviously with the HTTP Proxy.
Examination of the Content Filter (HTTP) log highlighted an error:
2008:01:13-11:05:51 (none) httpproxy[2765]: id="0064" severity="info" sys="SecureWeb" sub="http" name="web request blocked, forbidden file extension detected" action="block" method="PROPFIND" srcip="172.***.***.***" user="" statuscode="403" cached="0" profile="profile_0" filteraction="action_REF_DefaultHTTPCFFAction" size="2999" time="746 ms" request="0x9571bf8" url="bay121.oe.hotmail.com/.../******X@hotmail.com
This pointed me to Web Security > HTTP > Anti-Virus > File Extension Filter
I removed all extensions (default v7.1x listings) and re-enabled the HTTP Proxy. Low and behold connectivity to Hotmail through Outlook worked fine. I then started adding extensions to see which one was causing me grief.
To my total amazement, the extension that was causing the problem was COM.
In v7.1x there are a lot more default extensions than there were in v6.x. Initially I thought that one of these new extensions was causing the problem but that was not the case. In v6.x I was using the HTTP Proxy and the blocked file extensions were the standard ones ( exe, com, bat, pif, scr). This worked fine with Outlook Hotmail access.
Why is it different in v7.101?
It cannot be good that I have to allow COM extensions to get access to Hotmail through Outlook. This opens a new can of worms.
Something has to be wrong here!
