Astaro and Windows Update error

Hi,

I have the same problems as described in the following thread:

I have two machines behind an Astaro 6.x and none of them are able to download windows updates automatically. I can manually download them through the windowsupdate site, but not automatically.

I'm using transparent proxy.

I get the following in the log:

"Error 0x80200013
Download job failed because of insufficient range support"

I have had this problem for a while, and this weekend i reinstalled astaro just to see if there were some conf. issues on my box.

With a new install of astaro, i did only configure the proxy as transparent, and masqed the internal network to the external and allowed HTTP and HTTPS out from internal lan.

It still can't download any updates. What is wrong here?

    Place the following domain in the proxy 'Skip authentication for domains:' list

    microsoft.com
    windowsupdate.com

    and put the following in the content scanning url whitelist.

    \.windowsupdate\.com
    \.microsoft\.com

    that should fix it for you.

    when your proxy is in transparent mode, there is no authentication you can skip. you are thinking of something else. This thread is about the "automatic windows-update" which does not work over the proxy when there are no additional packetfilter-rules defined.

    For a windows-update via your browser (the manual update) you are right.

    Ah yes my bad should read a bit harder. Just thougth I'd post it as Id just fixed the problem on mine.

    exact, I've the same problem and the support said to me that it's a "bug" and there is no fix for the moment [:(]

    But, DrMabuse, you said "when there are no additional packetfilter-rules defined", what do you mean ? Can we "bypass" the proxy with creating packetfilters rules ???

    I was experiencing a similar issue (I don't run Windows systems on my internal network - only NetWare, OS/2, and Linux - but I do set up systems for clients, many of which run W2K or XP). For the first time since enabling transparent proxy on my Novell Security Manager 6.301 (ASG 6.301) system, I attempted a Windows Update on a new XP machine and was greeted with a 0x8024400a error.

    Naturally, the first thing I thought of was the clock, so I made sure that it was set correctly and synchronized the time via NTP. Next, I cleared all the cookies and restarted IE. The problem persisted.

    Finally, after searching here, I followed the steps outlined in http://portal.knowledgebase.net/display/2n/kb/article.asp?aid=184567&n=7&s=1 and that semed to do the trick. However, there was one catch: the single blacklist entry (which made no sense to me) was (obviously) blocking my regular traffic. Once I removed that, I was able to confirm that normal traffic was flowing, and Wintendo...er...Windows Update was working as expected.

    Hope this helps someone else at some point.

    A problem related to this might be the automatic update in firefox. A new version is out, but nothing happens. It just says : Downloading Firefox 1.5.0.5

    Does anyone know what domains should be skipped for this to work?

    Or better, does anyone know when there will be a fix from astaro available? I use a licensed version at work (v4) and is about to upgrade to v6 in the near future, but this must be fixed until i do. I use v6 at home.
