Android Connection using SSL

First of all, I am new to using an Android device so I may be doing something wrong.  I want to setup a SSL connection using my S4. I done this already on several windows machines so I know my SSL is setup in the UTM correctly.  I have already installed openVPN.  So, I am guessing that my next step is to use my phone and browse to the user portal so that I can click on the "install" button to install SSL VPN on Android or iOS phone.  When I do this, my phone says downloading but the downloading never completes.  The same thing happens on my home UTM and my work UTM.  What am I missing?

Android 4.2.2

Thanks.

  • Which download do you choose in the UserPortal? Since V9.1 (or so) there is a separate Link for iOS and Android devices.

But you have to install the app "OpenVPN für Android" from the Play Store first, as the download from the UserPortal is only a bunch of configuration files and certificates...

    • XG: HPE DL20 Gen9 (Core i3-7300, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD) | XG 18.0 (Home License) with: Web Protection, Site-to-Site-VPN (IPSec, RED-Tunnel), Remote Access (SSL, HTML5)
    • UTM: 2 vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 50GB vHDD, 2 vNICs on vServer (KVM) | UTM 9.7 (Home License) with: Email Protection, Webserver Protection, RED-Tunnel (server)
  • I am running 9.106-17.  There is a one button to "install" SSL VPN for android/iOS.  The download starts but never completes.  It fails after some time.

I have already downloaded from Goggle Play the OpenVPN for Android.
  • I guess this is a problem with your network or configuration.

How do you access UserPortal? From Internal WiFi?
Do you use the Web Protection? If yes, Standard or Transparent mode?

Anything in the IPS or Firewall logs?

  • What about the Web Filtering log?

  • Bob,  I did not see anything in the logs.  Just to me sure, I turned Web Filtering off and then tried to download again.  It did not help.
  • I do not know if the helps but I tried it on a different Android phone and the same think happened.  Then to to see what would happen, I hit the "install" button on Win7 computer and it downloaded a  file called username@ourdomain.com.  It is about 8K in size.
  • The default browser on android is the issue.  Install Firefox for Android and try again.

  • That was the trick.  BTW: I had already tried Chrome but it did not work.

    Thanks.
  • No problem.  I found that the Google browsers have some issues here and there on Android.  My default browser (and what I recommend to customers) on Android is Firefox.
