Which android VPN client app to use

Hello,

I'm trying to setup remote access via IPSec from my Samsung S4 to my astaro.  My Samsung S4 is running android 4.2.2 (I'm on the T-Mobile network).  My astaro is running 8.310.

So far I've only been able to get the NCP VPN Client Premium (trial) to work.  However, the trial is only good for 10 days and I don't want to spend $30 on the non-trial version if there are cheaper (or even free) android VPN clients that are working.  I've tried strongSwan and VPNcilla but have not been able to get them to work (probably because of user error).

There are a lot of threads reporting different levels of success or no success at all.  So was just curious what android VPN client app folks are using with success?

    Hi ,

    Use openvpn client and download the configuration from the user portal if the UTM.
    It's free it's working and its easy.

    I use the OpenVPN client on my iPhone5 and now prefer it to the iPhone's native VPN client.

    OpenVPN does not accept the .ini configuration file generated by astaro.  Is there a trick to get astaro to generate an OpenVPN .ovpn file?

    Hi ,

    No trick its easy.
    Install OpenVpn enter the user portal remote access then press install for android and iIOS configuration.

    Hmmm... There is not an "install for android and iOS configuration" option from the user portal that I can find.  That option must be for 9.x FW.  I'm running 8.310 FW.

    Hi ,

    In 8.xx if I remember good ( al my installs are for long time already 9.xx ) the configuration of this option is called Cisco in the remote access on the UTM admin.
    You need to configure this option and add your user to the allowed users there.
    Then you will see it in the remote access in the portal.

    And by the way in 9.xx it's also called Cisco VPN .
    When you will configure it you will have that option in the user portal.

    The Android OpenVPN client is at:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn

    I had trouble downloading the config file from the portal with the android browser (it showed in downloads as 'in progress' forever; Samsung Note 3, 4.4.2), but I was able to email it to myself and SAVE (not open) it with the gmail client; then I went into OpenVPN and opened the config file from 'Downloads'.
