Which android VPN client app to use

Hello,

I'm trying to setup remote access via IPSec from my Samsung S4 to my astaro.  My Samsung S4 is running android 4.2.2 (I'm on the T-Mobile network).  My astaro is running 8.310.

So far I've only been able to get the NCP VPN Client Premium (trial) to work.  However, the trial is only good for 10 days and I don't want to spend $30 on the non-trial version if there are cheaper (or even free) android VPN clients that are working.  I've tried strongSwan and VPNcilla but have not been able to get them to work (probably because of user error).

There are a lot of threads reporting different levels of success or no success at all.  So was just curious what android VPN client app folks are using with success?

    I had trouble downloading the config file from the portal with the android browser (it showed in downloads as 'in progress' forever; Samsung Note 3, 4.4.2), but I was able to email it to myself and SAVE (not open) it with the gmail client; then I went into OpenVPN and opened the config file from 'Downloads'.

    Barry, if you could please tell me in steps how you got it to work? 

    I just got the Note 3 a few days ago and really having such a large screen on this phone but I cannot get my VPN back up on my phone. I cannot figure out how to get OpenVPN or any VPN program to work with Astaro.

    Hi, if you installed the client app already, then you need to download the config file from the User Portal, and get in into the downloads folder on the phone, and open it from the app.

    Which part are you having trouble with?

    The part I don't see is the config file, I have my L2TP in Remote Access along with IPsec VPN and iOS device VPN configuration. 

    I tried the IPsec VPN but it is a certificate and the iOS device is *.mobileconfig which cannot be imported. 

    Right now I have L2TP over IPsec and Cisco VPN Client enabled under Remote Access and running 9.201-23.

    Hi,

    I'm using the OpenVPN client on Android which is an SSL VPN; if you configure the SSL VPN, you can download the Linux configuration from the User Portal and load that into the client.

    That was it, I thought I had to configure the Cisco VPN connection for OpenVPN. Once I did the SSL connection, it connected right away after I imported the settings and configured SSL to actually work.

    I think some people - many people - are having a problems after setting up the SSL VPN and then logging into the user portal, selecting remote access, and  then trying to download the config file.

    With Android it will NOT download from the basic web browser or Chrome.
    Firefox will download it on Android.

    You can also download it from a Mac or PC and then get the file over

    But this is a real pain - 
    What is the problem with Google browsers and the User portal ?

    Not at all user friendly for most users

    Hi,

    I am using Sophos UTM Home Firmware Version 9.306-6

    I have read this thread, and some others and nothing has helped me get my OpenVPN client on my android to accept a configuration file from the UTM user portal.

    Can someone please go through this step by step and explain how to get the configuration into the Android Open VPN client?  What the files extensions are supposed to be?  All I can get out of the UTM user portal is files of these types:

    .ini
    .mobileconfig
    .p12 (This imports, but it just puts it into the certificate store, which I assume is correct)

    Can't get any other file types out of it.

    I have the IPSEC VPN remote access set up, and it works great with my laptop.  Cannot get my Android to OpenVPN Client connected no matter what I try.

    Please help!
