What do you use your roadwarrior for?

After taking the time to setup IPSec VPN, I found that it wasn't quite what I expected.  For some stupid reason, I thought it would be similar to being hardwired to the network.  When trying to run this over a 144kbps IDSL line, I found that the latency was absolute garbage(~500ms).  This pretty much kept me from doing anything over it, let alone try logging into a netware server.

So my question is, what do you all use your VPN for?  Terminal services?  Small data transfers?  or do  you just have a speedier internet connection?  Or is there something I'm totally overlooking?

I spent a lot of time on this project and would like to get atleast some use out of it.  But I am pretty much at a loss.  Thanks in advance.

    Speed is an issue if you're trying to do something like open Word or Excel files over the connection. I have a partial T1 that uses 8 channels to give 512K and while it works it's not really usable.

    I use the PPTP to give me access to the network for things like terminal sessions into a Unix system, access to an Excahnge (more secure then OWA) server and Remote Desktop sessions.

    [/ QUOTE ] If you are opening your Word and Excel files from a remotely mapped Windows shared volume, it will be slow. The fault is not with the Internet or the VPN connection. The reason it is slow is because the Microsoft networking protocol used to connect the remote share is not capable of windowing (ironic isn't it, Windows can't do packet transmission windowing). Every packet sent using the Microsoft network protocol must be acknowledged from the other end before the next one is sent. Having multiple packets in transit at the same time is not possible.

    This is a Microsoft problem that we are all stuck with until the day Microsoft gets its act together, and either switches to open standards, or create some proper networking code of their own that is suitable for efficient use of wide area connections.

    Fog's statement about Microsoft not acting properly over latent connections is on the money!

    You can see this if you try saving to a floppy drive from inside Word versus copying a file from "Explorer"; Word takes foreva' to save. The software components of Office for writing to disk are tuned for 'high speed' media; anything else sucks (show me the source and I'll tell you why...).

    Microsoft hasn't been concerned about this because they encourage their corporate customers to use Terminal Services, which has lightweight bandwidth requirements (it only transmits screen changes in a compressed vector format).

    But clearly, you will need to improve your uplink speed; and the encryption necessitated by VPN protocols will do best with a monster fast CPU...
