PPTP Speed

Hi.

I only get 70kb/s through the pptp tunnel.
What's the limiting point? The 128bit encryption or the pptp overhead? And yeah the line to the provider could transfer more.
The limiting of the server to me would be 90kb/s.
Where's the point?

Depending on whether you're using 3des encryption or not, you'll loose between 20-50% of your pptp tunnel bandwidth when doing vpn stuff.

What is the best protcol to use when you want to balance security vs speed? A 50% bandwidth cost for 3DES is a bit excessive, I think. But nothing in life is free.

I would like others to give their opinions.

Hi alltogether,

Philipp has spoken about PPTP, this PPTP uses MPPE128.
I am very sorry but I do not have any performance data.
( will do some testing after the next release)

Blowfish is pretty fast but AES also and since it
is the encryption standard I would prefer it.
From the performance point of view it doesn't really
matter which method you select.

Some facts:

ASL 700MHz Celeron 3DES ~30MBit
SSH Sentinel W2K P900 3DES ~40MBit

ASL 700MHz Celeron AES ~80MBit
SSH Sentinel W2K P900 ~280MBit

For Blowfish Sentinel states during installation
on my system a IPSEC throughput of round about 185MBit.

SSH Sentinel seems to distend a bit [:)]

As you can see,there is no performance issue -
keep in mind that we are talking about WAN.
Which roadwarrior is connected with 45MBit to the internet [;)]
