New UTM Home, Working but Slow

After weeks of reading an planning I finally setup my new UTM Home edition server this weekend.

The hardware is a 2.0GHz Celeron, 2Gb RAM, IDE HDD, 2x 10/100 ports.

The installation is pretty much vanilla using PPPoE to a UK BT Fibre modem.  During the install firewall wizard settings I enabled all outbound traffic for now, Web, Terminal Service, Email, etc.

The only other thing I have done is un-tick some of the threat detection patterns that don't apply to my network.

The problem I have is that using speedtest.net my connection through the UTM is somewhat slower than using my previous netgear hardware router.  So I'm hoping for some advice.

I noted that starting the test through the UTM there is 5s pause before the download starts, it then starts the download quite slowly, shoots round to around 75mb and then quickly comes back and settles around 25-30mb.  Through the netgear the download starts instantly, goes quickly into the high 40's and stays there.

Hi, and welcome to the User BB!

Teched's advice is spot on. Google on site:astaro.org "speedtest.net" and limit the search to the last year.

Of course, you may have a hardware issue, so check out #7 in Rulz.

Do you have Web Protection enabled?

My previous UTM powered by a D525 Atom couldn't do more than 25MB over a single http stream. It's CPU Mark was ~700. See where your Celeron falls on https://www.cpubenchmark.net as a rough estimate.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I admit I didn't search for 'speedtest.net' directly, now I have it all seems clear that I don't actually have a problem as such.

It does sound like I could do with improving my CPU though, this is a single core on an old mobo I had laying around and I have now read elsewhere that the dual core atoms still struggle and they are better than what I have now.

I am going to have a look around for a better mobo + cpu I think and go from there.
