Sophos Endpoint - Slow boot and login

Hi all,

I am using the UTM version of Sophos, version 9.1. I am using the home edition.

After installing Endpoint protection, I noticed that my PC took several minutes to boot and login compared to before. 

When I login to the computer (win7) , I notice that the network icon shows a hung 'discovering' icon. My computer is completely unresponsive for about 3 minutes until Sophos has finished starting. CPU is at 100% at this point.

In order to prove that it is Sophos causing this issue, I installed Endpoint on my other, faster computer, also running Windows 7. Once again, there is a slow boot and login, with the discovering icon showing. What I notice about both computers is that if I try to start the Sophos Antivirus (during the 3 minute loading period), the computer completely hangs, and I have to restart the computer to make it usable again.

Is there a fix for this, as this is annoying having to wait for Sophos to sort itself out everytime I boot my computer?

    Hi Ben

    Assumption: Do you have Windows Defender active too on that PC? That may cause such hangs/delays.

    Recommendation: Disable Windows Defender and / or any other Anti Malware product running on that PC, so that Sophos AV runs exclusively.

    Hi Sascha,

    I have disabled Windows defender and still the PC hangs during boot / login

    Any other ideas?

    I've reported this internally already half a ago but sadly it has neither been fixed nor taken care of until now (Mantis #26924).

    Luckily I found out how to workaround this: Set the service startup type for 'SOPHOS MCS Client' to 'automatic delayed'. Please try it and give some feedback!

    Yes, I use the wireless connection on that computer. Your workaround fixed the computer that was operating over WiFi. 

    I have also got a computer that had the issue that was connected via a wired connection, and the fix worked for that too.

    I can confirm this workaround has resolved the startup delay on multiple Windows 7 clients here, both wired and wireless. Thanks!
