Skype doesn't seem to get its full outbound capacity

Hello everybody,

I have a 16 Mbit / 1 Mbit Adsl line. I've setup this pool (as it can been seen on the screenshots) and put a rule at the top that allows Skype to consume all that upload bandwith.

Unfortunately friends I talk to via Skype complain about a bad quality.

There's an almost constant outbound file transfer (mirroring backups), that's obviously the reason for the thin line. But shouldn't the above mentioned rule compensate for that?

    This feels kind of embarassing, no. I never really took notice of the dropdown above...

    Well, I now moved all my bandwith pools to the external interface, but can only activate one of them.

    I figured it would work this way:
    Total bandwidth in my case: 1024 kbit
    I can guarantee 700 k in the first pool and 700 k again in the 2nd pool. As soon as rule 1 is being satisfied all remaining bandwidth is reassigned judging from the values in 2nd rule and so on.

    But it appears all pools in sum cannot exceed the total bandwidth. Can anybody explain to me why? I thought the rule order would then specify how important a traffic selector is being seen?!

    I've read the article and also searched for other ones. But I still don't get why the sum of all pools can't exceed the total bandwidth. If it were reservations we wouldn't need the rule order, would we?

    Well, yes, the rule order still is necessary.  Say you want to guarantee 500Kb for the Sales department alone, and another 500Kb for everyone else.  Put the Sales rule first and it doesn't affect the second 500Kb guarantee.  Put the Sales rule second, and it has no effect since the traffic satisfies the selector for the rule for everyone.

    In general, the sum of bandwidth guarantees should be 95%, or less, of the available bandwidth.

    PS The neat thing about Astaro's QoS implementation is that there's no limitation on usage when you guarantee bandwidth - you're only setting a minimum.  If Sales only is using 100Kb, then the rest of the bandwidth can be used by others - there's no "reservation" of the unused 400Kb in bandwidth.

    I'm still not sure I get it...

    But I'll see what my changes did. It can only get better, considering I haven't actually been using QOS in the past...
