VOIP newbie

Does Vonage operate in the UK?  They are sort of the standard baseline for home use in the US.  Or you can check into if your ISP (BT?) offers a VOIP service, many telcos and cable providers in the US have these services.

Thx @Scott_Klassen . In terms of special equipment? Do I just need to buy a voip phone and plug it in to the network ?

With vonage, it's even easier than that.  You buy a little adapter box, which is basically a VOIP gateway that creates a tunnel to Vonage servers, which you can plug your existing POTS phone into.

There's also Skype.  I remember a couple of years ago reading about some hardware based phone which work with Skype that operate in the same way as the vonage adapter (as oposed to just a soft-phone on your computer).

To use a true standalone full VOIP phone, like one from Polycom, Cisco, Aastra, etc, you would need a VOIP PBX and a SIP-Trunk provider.  Too expensive for small installs.

There's a general misunderstanding that with VOIP, you can just call directly to every other phone in the world, which is not true.  VOIP calls still need to enter the traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) system at some point.  This is where the provider (SIP-Trunk) comes in.  

The big thing to look at is the pricing packages and restrictions, especially with international calls.

All-in-one VoIP Router and Adaptor | Vonage V-Portal VoIP Adaptor is one £10 and I guess I plug that to my switch connected to ASG and the phone and it's set.  Do I need to plugin my RJ11 phone line as well?

With this plan, you would no longer need the POTS line from BT.  In order to have both, you would need to buy a phone that supports two lines (two rj11 plugs), one would be rj11>>BT and the other would be rj11>>vonage adapter.  Or you can just go buy a second phone, if you don't have an old one laying about, and use a separate phone for each service.

Now I am totally confused [:(] I thought I could buy the relevant VoIP router and voip phone ,plug it to the switch>ASG and after subscribing to the relevant ISP I could make voip calls. Is that possible somehow, without touching the existing phone ser ice provided by BT ( and therefore the relevant RJ11)

Yes, for example if you went with Vonage, but you still want to keep the BT line.  There are two choices:

1)  You could just get another regular landline phone (rj11) which would connect to the Vonage adapter.  The physical connections would look like: phone>>Vonage adapter>>ASG.

2)  If you find it inconvenient to have two physical phones, you can buy a new one that accepts multiple lines.  For example:  Amazon.com: Panasonic DECT 6.0 2-Line Black Corded Cordless Phone with Two Handsets (KX-TG9392T): Electronics.  This phone has two rj11 jacks.  One would be for your existing rj11 line to your service from BT.  The other would connect to the Vonage adapter, then to ASG.

Be sure to setup the VOIP Security settings in Astaro, specifying the IP of the VOIP adapter, and the Vonage servers.

I need to see what are my options are I was going to voip since my BT is not as cheap. However, I have to have BT landline in order to have BT broadband and therefore I am already paying line rental etc from BT

What I would like to do in theory is stop using BT and start using the voip service but I don't think is possible.

Just visit the call centrall website they will tell you about all the feature and importance of VoIP phone system. You can get VoIP services at very cheap rates but their services is very reliable.
