VOIP newbie

Hi All

I am thinking of having a voip phone sitting behind astaro but I don't know anything about voip phones,equipment needed and so on.

I had a look at the forum (previous posts) and support guides and I know how the setup should be. However, do you have any recommendations in terms of provider (I am in the UK and I want cheep international calls [:)] ) and equipment?

Yes, for example if you went with Vonage, but you still want to keep the BT line.  There are two choices:

1)  You could just get another regular landline phone (rj11) which would connect to the Vonage adapter.  The physical connections would look like: phone>>Vonage adapter>>ASG.

2)  If you find it inconvenient to have two physical phones, you can buy a new one that accepts multiple lines.  For example:  Amazon.com: Panasonic DECT 6.0 2-Line Black Corded Cordless Phone with Two Handsets (KX-TG9392T): Electronics.  This phone has two rj11 jacks.  One would be for your existing rj11 line to your service from BT.  The other would connect to the Vonage adapter, then to ASG.
