Slow Internet UTM 110/120

What is the software version running on the UTM110/120?  For example 9.111-7

What features do you have enabled?

What is the specific test you are performing?  Is it a single source/destination/stream bandwidth test?

The UTM110/120 CPU, IPS, and expectations/marketing with a single source/destination/stream test is the most likely combination of causes for your results not "measuring up".

The published numbers (and this seems common with multiple, if not all, vendors) for firewall performance are the aggregation of multiple simultaneous streams.

iperf and stresslinux can be handy testing tools but real tests for your deployment depend upon your specific application/environment.

I hope that William sees this thread, Andreas.  I think he'll tell you that the 120 can't fill a 100Mbps pipe.  You might search here for similar threads.

you have too small of a unit.  That unit is good for maybe 50 megabits MAX with nothing on.  I ahve a 120 deployed and if they had anything faster than the 20 megabit pipe i would have to get them a faster appliance.

*living up to my sig line* it's actually a 110(same hardware as 120) basicguard so there's less to turn on..still i wouldn't push it past a 20 meg pipe.

I have just installed a new firewall, standard configuration, no extra services that I know of. It is connected to a 100/100Mbit Connection, but I only get 27/30 with the firewall connected. 99/99 without. Under the CPU usage Daily graph it shows maximum 7,68%, but at the dashboard it sometimes show over 50%(?) but usually arround 5%. I don't know where to start looking?

Do you have a reseller?  if not pm me.  if so i would go to the reseller..especially if a reseller advised you on this purchase.  Considering you want to fill a 100 megabit pipe AND actually use some security features i would recommend the sg210 minimum...but that could change depending on your subscription..number of users..etc etc etc.  If you have a reseller go back to them..if not pm me.

110/120 are worthless junk only good for use as a basic firewall (or a paper weight). If you add other features you'll experience a sharp drop in performance which is what your seeing.

I highly dislike and loath the 110/120 and sophos have left a bitter taste. We purchased a 120 with full guard for 20 users using adsl 2+ (22mbit sync) with just web protection a few ips rules and email protection. Any more than 5 users browsing and it would be a crawl 30 seconds to load google .... Turn off web protection and it was instant - but what's the point then.

We went back to sophos and after a lengthy support process and lots of user frustration we just bought a utm 220. It was night and day everything ran so much smoother. We had the utm 120 for less than a month (opened a support call within 7 days of owning it) and decided it wasn't fit for the purpose. 

Sophos wouldn't allow us to return it even though we were told be a sophos rep from sophos that it would meet our needs. Eventually they allowed us to return the hardware but because we had used the license we couldn't get a refund on that. So we would end up with a license with no hardware to use it with - great!  We just kept it and use it to collect dust... Occasionally we turn it on but realize is not worth our time.

The 220 was not perfect either as we had ram issues.... We decided to upgrade it with an extra 2gb of ram and now it's running like a well oiled machine!

There is some cheap full guard bundles out at the moment that comes with hardware included .... Maybe see if you can get one of these if they will allow you to return it.
