UTM9: VMware Tools Not Running

We have recently upgraded from Astaro V8.3 to UTM9 (virtual appliance, utm_9.003_esx_v5_x64_smp-disk1.vmdk) and we experience issues with vmware tools. 

On our former Astaro V8, vmware tools status was reported as “Running (3rd-party/Independent)”. But on the new UTM9, the status is “Not Running (3rd-party/Independent)”. This causes issues in the vMotion pre-check to fail, and also make us unable to do soft shutdowns/restarts.

Any ideas how to fix this?

    If you read much here, you'll see that your best bet is to load 9.106-17 from the software ISO instead of installing the virtual appliance - the installer sense that it's installing into VMware and installs the VMware tools.  Try that and let us know if your issues are resolved.

    Actually, I've just loaded another UTM9 ovf-template into our esxi test enviroment, and that vm starts up with wmware tools running. I haven't restored any backup or restarted it yet though. I'm going to test it for a while, since I think a ovf makes a cleaner vm in the end. Otherwise I go with your suggestion with the iso. Thank you.

    The pre-built VM images have some problems; e.g. they don't use the ideal network drivers, and iirc they don't have SMP support.

    This is apparently because of a requirement by VMWare for publically distributed images.

    It's recommended to build a new VM from the Software ISO, and use the VMXNET3 NIC drivers.
