Reports and backups - E-mail not working

The executive report and the backups are not being sent to my gmail address.  I am a home user running the latest version.  Does the External SMTP server need to configured?

    Check in the Mail Manager on the SMTP Spool tab to see if anything's trapped there.

    There were 13 messages spooled and waiting for delivery.  I deleted them and tried to send another backup but it is spooled and waiting for delivery.

    Also, this is a new setup, its only been running for 3 days.  It is a software install that is running on my own hardware.

    Here is my smtp proxy log:

    I am using 8.8.8.8 for my DNS forwarder and from the support tab --> tools section a dns lookup to gmail.com is successful.
