daisy chaining routers

Depends on your wired router.  Most of the time ports on a router are just switch ports or hub ports, and in that case you'll be fine.  But if the wired router has some kind of firewall on it and the ports on the router are tied into the firewall it might take some configuration.  Odds are good though that the ports all function as part of the same subnet in which case you could just plug in the wireless and you'll be able to see your astaro just fine.  Easiest way to find out is just to plug it in and see what you get.  You won't break anything: the worst that can happen is you see nothing and in that case you'll find out quickly that you need to do some configuring on your wired router.

The next part of the question is this: do you want your wireless connections to run through the astaro, or are you just using it for something else?  If you want protection for your wireless network, you won't get any by plugging the wireless router into the wired router.

I want my wireless connection to run through the astaro just like my desktop and my xbox.  Only my laptop will be on a wireless connection.

Then you'll need to place the wireless router "behind" the LAN connection of the Astaro.

Sorry, I spoke before really understanding your network. Which is correct, A or B?

A) Internet -> Wired Router -> PC/XBOX/Astaro

B) Internet -> Astaro -> Wired Router -> PC/XBOX

B is correct.  Internet -> Astaro -> Wired Router -> PC/XBOX/LAPTOP

but I'm wanting to go wireless with the laptop.  can I plug a wireless router into the wired router and still get connectivity with the astaro?

Ok, yeah, sorry, I misunderstood your network earlier.  

I don't know what wired router you have, but there is usually 1 port that is labeled Internet and then there are a number of other ports that say something like Network.  If you don't plug anything into the Internet port and keep everything in the Network ports you should be just fine.

Also, make sure you do not have more than one device serving DHCP; ideally the firewall.

the router i ordered had wired ports on it too so i can hook everything up no problem.  thanks for the replies.

edit:two wireless capable linksys routers i have looked at have 4 wired ethernet ports along with the wireless capabilities.  So I just hooked everything up on the WRT54GL (which is a cheapo btw and too slow for my networking wants) and everything is running through the astaro computer just fine now.  I didn't know wireless routers had wired ethernet ports when I made this post.  I ordered a Linksys E4200 which is considerably faster.  Transferring files at 2.5 MBS is just too slow.
