ASG220 CPU usage by reporting

Hi All,

I have an issue with my ASG220 running 100% CPU which doesn't seem to be affacting WWW and Email throughput but is making the WebAdmin and user portals a nightmare. 

The device is running current firmware, i've rebooted and also purged the mail log as postgress reporting service seems to be chewing the lion's share of the processor. Attached is a capture of the dashboard and also the offending service, I would apprecaite any assistance anyone can offer,

    Good catch to have asked that question, William.

    Based on the other 220s I've seen in similar situations, the 100% problem begins when a transient overload forces the Astaro to start swapping; after that, it struggles for minutes, maybe hours, to catch up, but only a very-light load for more than a few minutes allows it to get things under control again.

    Matt, I hate to have to tell you this, but the Astaro Sizing Guidelines published in Feb.'09 indicate that the maximum number of users when doing Mail Security, Web Security and Intrusion Prevention is 70.  The recommended maximum number of users if you turn all those off is 150.  Bruce is right (as usual) - you really have no choice but to upgrade to a 320 or get your own hardware and upgrade to a 250-user license.  Frankly, as new as this unit is, I think your reseller should go to bat for you so that you can get full credit on the trade-in.

    OK, response from Astaro tech who jumped into the box and poked around was to dial the reporting back, default being set to retain 6 months - changing all back to 1 week and viola, CPU drops to 3 - 15% util... it's a band-aid fix as I really like having as much reporting as possible. I'm also interested to see how it goes tomorrow under load as this fix went in towards the end of the business day here (Sydney, AU)

    But I also understand what you're saying... time to chat to the reseller, I have some servers that could handle the Astaro firmware on their ear but I really like the idea of the intergrated appliance model.

    so did this fixed your problem? dial the reporting back to 1 week or not? i have also a asg220 with about 55 users with all proxies running.

    asg220 is using 646 mb of ram, but i have also 22 % swapspace, why is it not using the hole memory.

    it is..Linux is not windows..it will not touch swap unless it is out of ram.  The graphic in the webadmin doesn't give the whole picture.  You need to either dial back reporting and log retention or upgrade...i would upgrade to a higher level box with more ram.

    there's no functional difference between the ASG and the ASL...just one is hardware built by astaro and one is your own.  I'm a fan of B but i can understand those who are fans af the first one..[:)]

    Hi Sebastian,

    Yes, this instantly resolved the performance issue in my case. The only reason I said it was a band-aid fix is because I was wearing my IT Manager hat and prefer all the logs and reports I can get my hands on. If you dial back reporting to 1 week it should resolve your performance issues.

    Yes, I actually have some installs running on server hardware (HP DL-3XX 4GB) and it screams along, appliance was the best fit for this case though but obviously it was under spec'd.

    It's a shame with the price of memory these days Astaro (and other vendors for that matter) don't throw more memory at their devices... I assume the ASG4XX + have more memory, and that's why though.
