When I turn on http proxy, network goes up & dn

I installed Astaro on a new server with 640MB of memory and tons of diskspace.  When I turn http proxy on, Internet traffic works for a while then stops for 20 seconds, then works for 5 minutes, then stops for 20 seconds.  If I turn off http proxy, it works 100% of the time.  When it stops, not even pings go through and that isn't HTTP!  Even MSN Messenger stops.  I am not getting any emails about squid from the notification system.  No errors appear in cache.log.  Clearing the cache has no effect.  One possible hint, if I reinstall and turn on http proxy, it works for perfectly for 3 days or so.  I switched computers and used a much faster computer with more memory, and it is doing the exact same thing.  I went to the console and did many "ps -aux" commands and appended them to a file so I could read the output.  Squid usually is taking .1% of the CPU and at most it goes to 4%.  The disk usage is at 3% for the squid partition.  It is connected to my Cisco 675 router that is connected to DSL.  I love squid when it is working.  I usually get 50% hits from cache.  I have lots of free CPU and tons of free disk and lots of memory.  I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this to work and would appreciate any and all help!!!

    - kernellogfile (/var/log/kernel)
    - middlewarelogfile (/var/log/mdwlog)

    Nothing to note in those log files.  No errors, no warnings.  
    Any other ideas?????
    I made the following changes:
    Under HTTP Proxy, I removed all services except for HTTP (I even removed SQUID).
    I added another DNS server address.
    I removed DNS caching.

    I enabled HTTP PROXY.  I watched the live log and saw the MISSES and the HITS.  It was working great.  Then all of a sudden I lost all connection to the Internet.  When I finally got back on (I had to reboot), I turned off HTTP PROXY and everything is working fine again.

    Could this be my NICs????
    Could it be an interaction between SQUID and my CICSO 675 DSL router???
    Come on, this can't be just me.  I am not doing anything out of the ordinary.  The same thing has happened on two computers.  It works GREAT unless I turn on HTTP PROXY.  Any issues with particular NICs???  Any other settings I can try????

    The following is my set up in the Proxy section for HTTP.  Been running for 3mos+ without an issue.

    Operation Mode: Transparent

    Log Level: Full

    Anonymity:  None

    Caching: Enabled

    Allowed networks: Lan

    Allowed target services:  Pick the ones you want to pass through the proxy

    Note:  Ensure the Status is green.

    I thought it was fixed.  I removed the NICs and moved them to new slots.  But the problem came back about 14 hours later.  I will buy 2 new NICs and try again tomorrow.

    Any ideas from you folks???  What brand of NIC should I use.  I have the RealTek cheap ones.  I can go to Intel or 3COM.  What is best????

    I have some netgear and linksys that were around $15 that I'm using at home if you need something less expensive.

    What is the hostname of your ASL? Do you have a "_" in the name?

    Which one is configured to masquerade your internal LAN? The router or the ASL box? Make sure that ONLY ONE OF THEM is masquerading.

    I had exactly the same issue and worked out with my ISP for over a week to find a solution (meanwhile I disabled the HTTP proxy), until he mentioned something about NAT on the router! That's when I figured out that I had NAT configured on both the ASL and the router and it just messed up everything.

    I can't be sure this is the situation on your side, but checking will not harm.

    The hostname is "router". 

    The network going up and down was happening so I took the following actions:
    1) I swapped out the machine I was using for ASL.  The new machine has a different motherboard, CPU, Memory, but the same NICs.
    2) I swapped out the NICs and reinstalled.  Again, it worked for a few hours and then started losing the network connection.

    So now I have a different box entirely.  I have the same ISP and the same CISCO 675.  I don't see how either of those could be the problem, but I have an open mind.

    Interesting.  Please, any help would be appreciated.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!! I was using the RealTek NICs. I put in a couple of NetGear NICs and the problem went away. It is my opinion that it appears that the RealTek NICs have serious problems. Too bad I spent so much time and money trying to figure it out.
