Use SMTP proxy without paying for it...

The answer is that you don't want to use the SMTP Proxy.  First, setup and enable a NAT rule like

{External AV/SPAM service} -> SMTP -> 'External (Address)' : DNAT to {Mail Server}

That now will capture all inbound SMTP traffic before the SMTP Proxy gets a look at it.

Then, delete all the settings in the SMTP Proxy and disable it.

It's that simple!

We're considering moving our first layer of SMTP filtering to a cloud based offering to reduce spam and eliminate junk mail from using our Internet bandwidth.  All the appliance based solutions we have looked at seem to have issues dealing with phishing / spear phishing attacks and we're looking to get some additional protection from those.

I'd like some opinions from anyone else that has made this move as well as any comments Bob may have to share [:)]

The bandwidth savings likely won't be noticeable compared to using Astaro Anti-Spam.

Of the 919 emails sent to me over the last week, only 49 were delivered and quarantined, representing about 150KB, or less than one byte every four seconds.  470 emails were not sent to our server because the sender failed one of the SMTP tests: RDNS/HELO, RBL, BATV and SPF.

By "junk mail," I assume you mean emails from opt-in sources where your user has forgotten about signing up and won't opt-out.  Astaro's End User portal will allow your users to manage personal blacklists and whitelists for mail, so none of those need to come through your pipe, either.

Of the 2116 emails sent to ex-employees during that time, none came though our pipe - they failed recipient verification - another SMTP-time test.

One or two phishing emails a week get through to my mailbox.  I know enough to not click on the links, but, even then, Astaro's Web Security should block access to those sites.  Every client PC should have its own security layer, and that, also, should prevent phishing.
