[v7.000] POP3 Proxy flakey

POP3 proxy fails to connect to the remote POP server approx 30% of the time. Not a load issue as am only running one PC using POP, and it only checks 2x POP servers every 10 minutes.

Happens intermittently to both servers, sometimes just one server.

Error in Outlook client:
Task 'pop.iprolink.co.nz - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: -ERR (Proxy) connection error'

Error in POP3 Proxy log:
2007:01:29-14:51:52 (none) pop3proxy[4189]: id="110Q" severity="error" sys="SecureMail" sub="pop3" name="Connection error." message="Unknown connection error" serverip="203.152.100.4" dstport="110" srcip="192.168.150.1"

I noticed this in the Beta releases as well but hoped for a fix in the GA.

- Currently have AV switch off for POP3.
- Heuristic SPAM and URL checking is both enabled.
- Extension blocking is using the default list of extensions.
- No expressions in expression filter.

Is there any other info I can provide to help fix this issue?

Yes, Prefetch is off.
I have now turned off Heuristics SPAM, and URL detection.
Situation is not improved.

It lookes like, the POP3 proxy don't delete all messages from the pop3 server, after i downloaded it to the client. these messages are all spam, which will be now for ever on the server.

I wish Manfred had updated this thread with the exact details.

But, never mind. There is a minor bug in the prefetch function concerning the failure to delete all messages from some pop3 accounts which Manfred (koma) has identified and is fixing for a future up2date release, hopefully the next one.

I have the same 0x800CCC90 error and strangely if i activate encryption for incoming pop3 messages (I use outlook 2003), that means port 995 instead of 110, the problem disappears. The only probel then is that I always have a warning message about the certificate (problem with CN name). I hope this helps pinpoint the problem.

Is it working now? I would like to implement it in our Russian site but not if it's 'flakey' still.

The strange Outlook error messages is not caused by the pop3 proxy. The proxy only listens on port 110. Errors while using port 995 (pop3 ssl) are not referenced to the proxy.

Simon, the proxy is working. You can use it in your Russian site, although some little improvements will be released with the next up2date.

the problem only occurs if you are using prefetch, otherwise the proxy works fine. BUT, without prefetch you don't get all the user self management functionality, while you will get the daily blocked reports, nothing else works.

The ramifications are that a lot more spam gets through, especially the messages about vitamins and other similar type drugs. You also don't get the facility to release messages, which is quite important to me as a number of my e-mailers have problems, are not network savvy and I need the messages.

I am looking forward to the fix for my home use, just to cut down the junk.

The POP3 server is in Australia and the end users are in Russia, so prefetch would be awesome.
