pop3 daemon not running - restarted

I am getting above messages from my Firewall. They first occured after update to 5.019 - three times within 4 days. Then silence. Now, after update to 5.021 I get that message hourly (not exactly 60 minutes, but anywhere between 50 and 90 mins)!
Two questions:
- anyone had the same problem (and maybe solution?)
- is the proxy periodically restarted or "on demand" - meaning, if it dies, is there a cronjob does checks for it periodically and restarts or does it get restarted when some client in the inside network tries using it and it is not running?

the check if the proxy is running is done fairly often (every couple of sec)

that may be true..however this did not become a problem for this and other daemons until 5.019...and blaming old hardware is not the ticket as faster machines are seeing this too..

this is strange since there were no updates (but I mean really none, not even close to that change root) in (or around)5.019... worth investigating

I'm also experiencing this problem. The POP3 proxy is restarted every few seconds. Due to this our users very often can't fetch there mails from our mailserver. I had to disable the proxy and have to rely on local virus scanners on each workstation only. Hope a solution to this is found soon.

I'm not sure i'have the same problem but when cutomers send us an email thats about 10 Mb in size, we can't check mail anymore (timed out).
And i get (when mail is working) al lot of mails regarding restarting of the pop3 deamon.
When i delete the mail in question (after downloading the attachment) throu webmail (our mailserver is on the wan). Then everything is working fine.

Maybe your problems are also related with mail size ?

10 megs? with that 500 mhz machine the pop3 daemon will take 2-7 minutes to process EACH mail that size. You will need to either increase your cpu or increase your mail client's timeout value.
