asix ax88179 usb 3.0 ethernet adapter

hi,

has anyone tried to use an asix ax88179 based usb 3.0 ethernet adapter on latest sophos utm?

I see that asix.ko is shipped with the 3.12 kernel but it seems to be an old one.

maybe someone already has one of these adapters at home and can test.

or any other usb 3.0 ethernet adapter available that works?

thanks

  • sorry, just realized that the module for this would be ax88179_178a.ko.

hmmm, it seems I need to wait and see if this makes it into stock linux kernel.
  • If it's not in the vanilla Linux kernel yet, don't expect it in the UTM anytime soon. Sophos uses SLES ( SUSE Ent. ) and they usually lag behind kernel wise ( enterprise dists focus on stability, not features).
  • on the feature site someone mentioned it is in the kernel since 3.9.
I can find it in the longterm 3.10 train so I hope the astaro guys can enable it in one of the next releases.

not sure about the sles thing, I remember someone from astaro mentioned that their build system is running on suse but the distro is build from scratch.

anyway, bandwidth demand is rising ;-) (and unfortunately all the small NUC like hardware have only one nic) ...
  • Hi,

I know it's been an old topic, but I have actually purchased Axago usb3.0 to Gigabit adapter with a chipset ASIX AX88179. I have to say it is unstable. On the 30Mbps solid link I get about 6Mbps stable. Perhaps it is my setup I can't tell yet. I'm using UTM 9.3 virtual appliance on esxi6.0. I haven't tried USB2 yet, but after playing with different settings for the past 3 hours I'm really disappointed. I know esxi xHCI driver is working fine, because I'm getting decent speeds on external drive that's passed through to the Windows VM. I hope that's something that can be fixed soon, because I don't have a room on my lab machine to add more NICs...

Have any of you tried this yet with same results?

    Cheers
