Mini-ITX + dual Intel LAN motherboard

it varies...when folks start having various issues from performance to networking to general crashes it is almost always a non-intel or non-broadcom nic involved.

I was trying to find out if you had had experience of problems with Realtek having limitations on throughput. I am currently on wire broadband, possible there will be ftc available, which would double the theoretical speed, and I am interested to find out any experiences with higher speeds on the Realteks.

The system I have has two onboard nics, the reason for buying it in the first place, speeds up to 1000 Mbps.

name it and the problem exists with realteks.  Many(if not all) of the cheap nics are soft-nics like the realteks.  If it doesn't specifically cite an Intel or Broadcom chipset i do not purchase it.  I went away from using anything non-Intel or non-Broadcom back in v4.

You might find Skinflint Price Comparison UK useful.  It has a great tool for choosing the options you require from a component and then telling you not only the options but where in the UK its cheapest and in stock etc.

I bought a dual intel NIC for about £30 off ebay (branded Dell) so I didnt need a dual port board

My experience is that it is very hard to find a good mITX motherboard with Dual Intel NICs therefore I went for GA-Z97N-WIFI which has Intel and Atheros AR8161 (although the new 1.1 revision now uses Realtek for 2nd NIC) - then I found that the AR8161 is unsupported (HCL only includes AR8131/8151).  So in the end I had to add a PCIe Intel Gbe CT NIC in the available slot.  Disable the Atheros NIC in BIOS.  Also, the Wifi card is not detected by UTM (but useful if you can run Windows/inSSIDer using another SSD).

My advice would therefore be to find a good MB with 1 INTEL Gbe NIC and add a INTEL PCIe Gbe NIC.

I wanted a book sized solution, and I contacted a manufacturer which used all Intel chips, not helpful, 
didnt come back and didnt give me a warm feeing, in fact I dont think they really wantd to sell me anything.
Found another box, with Intel i3 processor but Realtek dual onboard nics, so bit the bullet.
Now running everything in xen server 6.5 (utm, some servers) so far so good, saved my self over a 100 euro's

I'm building a completely new little box for UTM (my first one for this purpose, too). These are my picked parts:
1 x Intel Celeron G1850, 2x 2.90GHz, boxed (BX80646G1850)
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sports DIMM kit 8GB, DDR3-1600, CL9-9-9-24 (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00)
1 x ASRock Z97M WS
1 x mini-Box PicoPSU-80, 80W external
+ an external power adaptor

The ASRock Z97M WS (µATX) is a bit pricey in comparison to the other boards, BUT it has one Intel I210-AT and an additional Intel I217-LM port. The G1840T (2x 2.4GHz) which has a lower TDP (only 35W instead of 55W) could be picked as well.

I currently have a 25Mbps/5Mbps connection with a maximum of 8 users at any time.

Edit: I just realized, that you absolutely want an ITX board... the Z97M is a microATX [:(]
