Sophos UTM SG 550 - Will it be fast enough?

In the 5xx & 6xx range you are getting some very expensive gear so your Sophos partner really does need to go through their decision process as to how/why they think that particular model is the best. The sizing guide (which btw, is not supposed to be available public download, it's an internal document for partner use only) is only a *guideline.*

A lot of the sizing comes down to the partner's knowledge of the gear and also a detailed understanding of your particular needs. Partner's also have access to Sophos pre-sales support who can assist in getting trial units & trained engineers to assist in the whole process.

Partner's are also going to be your first point of contact for support during the licensing period, unless you buy premium support, so it's important to get a good one involved at this stage.

Your experience with the SG550 is going to depend heavily upon your enabled features and actual traffic patterns.

You would also need to consider if the unit is only handling North/South traffic flowing in and out of the Internet, or if you also have East/West traffic going between internal networks going through the unit.

Your actual requirements will vary significantly based upon those traffic patterns.  The SG 550 can handle a large amount of traffic from a large number of users, you need to know a bit more about what traffic you are putting through it first to know if it is sized correctly.

The new hardware is much faster. But with a unclever configuration you can slow down every hardware.

I'd suggest having your Partner do a complete evaluation of your needs to determine what appliance is the best fit for your organization; they can also engage Sophos Channel support to ensure the right unit is being purchased.

Thanks for the information.  We have gone for a SG 550 with the plan to add another later this year.  Its just been delivered so now I have some setting up to do.

If you're thinking of a upgrading to an Active/Active Cluster, it would be cheaper to get a 650 now if that's what the numbers say (they suggest a thorough evaluation as suggested by Drew and Bruce).   If your reseller has firmly recommended the 550 and you're planning on a Hot-Standby (Active/Passive) unit later in the year, then that sounds good.
