NIC Upgrade

Can I change NIC Hardware easily, or do I need to do Kernel module changes.

Example can I just power off the unit swap NIC's and power the unit back on, then just configure for the new NIC in the web interface or to I need to install the kernel modules for the new NIC.

    If the new NIC's are of a make which is compatible you can do that without installing other kernel modules. I've done that numerous times over the years when a hardware got broken and never had any issues. 
    With "compatible make" I mean NIC's from wide-supported makers like Intel which I always use, but if you want to use something brand new or somehow exotic then you have to try by yourself.

    Normally for the UTM to see the new NIC, you have to reinstall the UTM software.

    If you are on a budget, TP-LINK works great as well.  I was able to replace a 17 year old 10/100 Kingston card that I received at the beginning of the DSL era for a (1) gig TP-LINK card with very minor and little configuration changes.  It works really well because I went from like 60% errors and 2k+ carrier resets to no errors and no carrier resets.  There were other problems, but not as significant as errors and carrier resets.

    @bruhja:  FYI, manual changes from the shell are unsupported and in the case of paid licenses will void your support.

    Hi Greg,

    You can find new Intel NICs as low as $29; I don't see much point in recommending anything other than Intel or Broadcom.
