Refreshing my Hardware for Home UTM

Hi All

Been a very happy home user of UTM for a while now (2 years i think)

I've been running Dual Wan ADSL2 (2x 10 megabit lines) with a single LAN.  About 20 devices connected.  Just your usual home stuff like PCs, phones, tablets, HTPCs, NAS's etc.

Its running UTM on a DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 small factor HP PC.  2 gig of ram.  Onboard Lan and 2x realtek NICs.  With an old 80gb hard drive.

Want to do some refreshing of hardware:

the two areas I am thinking I should look at is:
1) replace the Lan's NIC with a quality Intel 1Gigabit/s card?
2) upgrade the hard drive to a new 7,200RPM model?  (I see cheap consumer SSD's are not recommended ?)

Would these couple of changes improve the performance?

Anything else I should look at?  

Is it ok to leave the ADSL links on Realtek NIC's - I wouldnt have imagined a performance gain switching to Intels?

The CPU seems to handle the job well, it doesnt max out.   Ram seems to always be ok too.

    Hey Noddy,

    Of those two choices, your best bet is to bump the RAM to 4GB (or more). Couple of 2GB DDR2 sticks should run you $50-$100. UTM 9.x is more of a memory hog then 8.x and in my own testing (2 power users / 5 devices hanging of 50/5 DSL) 4-6GB is good enough for running most functions (don't run IPS, waste of CPU use at home IMO).

    If a completely new board is in the budget, then yeah Intel NIC's, i3/i5, 4-8GB RAM, etc. [:)]

    Q's:
    1) Are the Realtek NICs ok for the ADSL Modems
    2) what breed of HDD should i go for (eg a Green type power saver )

    Realtek NICs seem to be..."problematic".  I've seen in on these boards as well as other UTM appliance boards.  You may not have an issue with them or you may go through pains because of them.  If you PC supports the space or if you can find a small form factor model, you can get dual or even quad port Intel Gig-E NICs on Ebay.  Relatively inexpensive, too.

    The memory looks good.  I have the IPS, AV, and Web Protection modules running with 8GB with 1 PC, 2 servers, tablet, phone, and PS3 doing Netflix with no real performance issues.  I'm at 31% memory utilization.  That said, I do have the content filter database downloaded into RAM.

    I can't say much about the processor and board as I haven't used them but, baring any known performance problems with those platforms should work as dual-core units tend to be ran on the business class appliance models.  FYI, I'm running mine of a Core 2 Quad 8400.

    get the ram to 8 gigs minimum imo.  I would highly advise broadcom nics as intel seems to be having some issues with their linux drivers.

    Also the 7200 rpm drive is only going ot help you with boot time honestly.  If that drive is under 5 years old i would keep it especially if your total usage is below 50%.  Otherwise go for one of the "green" or "intellipower' drives..[:)]

    Ok will look at a green drive, the one thats in there is at least 5 years old probably older so it must be due to die soon!!

    not necessarily but time is against you there..and hard drives are dirt cheap..[:)]

    that is an e1000e driver which has numerous linux bug filings.  the issue is specifically the 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controller.  you cna give it a try and see what happens.

    Have now upgrade to the new build.

    I also got a 1gb NIC with a broadcom chip.

    The performance increase is unbelievable.

    Went with 8gb ram too.
