i3-2120 for a 300Mbps fiber link?

Hi guys, am looking for input for the following configuration.

This will be used in a home environment. I don't intend to have IPS enabled, and HTTP proxy caching will be turned off. I have a 300Mbps fiber link to my home, and I intend to do a site-to-site IPsec VPN (for development with Azure).

This "appliance" is actually a used OptiPlex 980 SFF, with an additional PCI-e GE card.

The specifications are as follows:

i3-2120 (2x 3.3 GHz)
2GB of DDR3-SDRAM
250GB HDD

    Without those features enabled, it may work but I recommend at least an I5.

    I have to agree with bruce.  I'd go core i-5 at least 3.0 ghz.  Make sure if you are going to move that much data you have 4-8 gigs of ram.

    If you already have the hardware, give it a try. Make sure to use Intel or Broadcom NICs.

    You should be able to get about 300mbps through the IPS with that CPU BTW; my 3.4GHz i5 gets 320mbps:

    he is wanting ot use http proxy a/v and others too.  the i3 is going to be borderline if he has more than a few users at once.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for your replies.

    Nope, I will not be using any http proxy, antivirus and IPS. The purpose of having this "router" in place is just to do Site-to-Site VPN, Client-to-Site VPN and some light firewalling (port forwarding etc).

    The NICs are one Realtek and one Intel. I've heard many saying not to buy Realtek, are they really that bad? This is for a homelab environment, and Intel NICs are costly...

    On the other hand, I have a hp compaq dc7900 (Core 2 3GHz E8400, 4GB RAM, 250 GB HDD) how much throughput do you think this will achieve with the above use? Thanks! NICs are 1 Intel and 1 Realtek.

    You have an extremely powerful i5 processor, and are only managing 320Mbps? I did not know IPS was that intensive.

    Yes, Snort is very intensive. 

    However, note that I was doing single-stream tests; it should be faster with multiple simultaneous clients.

    regarding your NICs; the Realtek NICs make the CPU do most of the work, so you are likely to see decreased performance with Realtek NICs.

    snort depends on things that are anachronistic these days:
    1.  Raw ghz
    2. high single thread performance.

    so the fastest i-5 is good for about 300-ish megabit per instance of snort.  probably 90% of the utm is multi-threaded...but snort is purely single threaded.  You have to design a system differently for snort.

    search the forums for snort and filter by my username.  I have gone into lengthy detail too many times to repost it again..[:)]
