HA pair with only HA cable connected?

We have some small offices where we are deploying redundant pairs of SG115s.  These offices typically have a small dumb switch with no VLAN capability.

If we just use the SG pair with nothing but the HA cable connected, will that be sufficient for the partner device to stay up to date (config and firmware updates) or do we need to have the partner device connected to the WAN as well?

The idea would be that if the primary device ever failed, onsite staff would simply shift the WAN and LAN connections from primary to spare...

    Hi pesos,

    For HA to work, both the units have to be identically & properly connected otherwise the HA system will not work. This is because fail over is automatic in High Availability, you won't need staff onsite to swap over.

    Wiring them isn't all that difficult as simple workgroup switches can often suffice in this case. For several years one of my offices ran a Linksys Small Business 5-port 10/100 switch on the WAN sides of the UTM as the ISP's modem only had one port.

    Thanks Drew - I realize we can simply use a couple of cheap 5 port switches for our two ISPs but that just adds more SPOFs into the picture...

    related question - I have an SG230 pair that are cabled identically with the exception of one extra interface that is only cabled into one - it goes directly into a 4g device that is just a backup/failsafe for us - we don't care if it is available in a failover event.  Right now our spare is showing "unlinked" - how can we set things up so that HA will still function even without this one extra interface on the spare?

    Good question.

    HA does a sanity check between nodes so if there's an active interface on the master but not on the slave, I think the HA won't permit the two units to link up. Would like someone with more experience using HA and/or 4G failover to chime in, as I've never used 4G.

    Correct, the cabling must be the same on HA units.  Get a switch to put between the 4G device and the UTMs, so you can connect both.
