Are there any particular benefits to not virtualizing the UTM?
I've got the UTM running at home, currently on a D525 atom. I obtained a Dell R210 (i3) to upgrade this device as my connection and the services I use (nearly all of them...) are going beyond what the little Atom can handle. I can only get about 60-75% of my connection speed (50/5mbps) on a single thread http test (speedtest.net), and things get hairy when groups of family/friends come over and there's multiple new wireless devices trying to compete with the existing network for bandwidth.
My initial thoughts were to go ahead and throw another 4-12gb RAM in the r210 (currently 4gb), put ESXi on it, virtualize the UTM, and have a little bit of room available to put some light linux servers on.
I do have another ESXi host with plenty of resources available, so virtualizing the UTM isn't really necessary, but it's a power hog and it would be nice to have something available for "critical" services that the UPS is going to be able to power for an extended period in the event of an outage. That is, of course, unless there are compelling arguments against it.
