UTM HE not connecting to Router

I am a Noobie and I have just installed UTM 9 for use in home.
I want only to use the web proxy so have only one nic - which I am told is a config I can use in as a web proxy in "one arm mode".

Problem is that I cannot get the router to recognise the UTM.
Router is D-Link IP configured as 10.1.1.1.
Mask is 255.0.0.0

UTM
IP is 192.168.2.100
Mask is 255.255.255.0

What do I need to do to get these two talking... network lights on nic are red and amber.

Did note in the install log that the entry "127.0.0.1 refused connection" or similar occurred during install.

Hi,

first of all change one of the IP´s ;-)

If the router have 10.1.1.1 you could gave UTM 10.1.1.2 BUT ALLWAYS use the same subnet.

Hi,
you will need two NICs. The only configuration that uses one NIC is the SUM (UTM Manager). You are asking the proxy to send and receive on the same interface which does not work and it cannot intercept the packets.
The http traffic would still go to your original device.

Not sure why as a home user you would want an extra device in the network, the UTM can do just about everything you need.

Thanks all, I have the web admn now up and running. I was thinking I had the IP's and subdomains screwed up but could not figure out why... working now.
I have an old PC with only one NIC, hence the reason for using as a web proxy only.
The advice I have from a proper techie type chap is that the proxy will work in "one arme" mode, that is with only one NIC. This is proving to be a second learning for me.

My cofiguration looks something like this:

wireless dsl router ISP
sophos proxy dsl router (same router as above

Such fun!

Hi,

Yes, the proxy can be used with a single NIC.

In your case, it might make more sense to put the proxy inside the router, otherwise, you could easily (mis)configure an open proxy.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the confirmation. The physical topology has the ADSL router standing between all other devices and the ISP.

Can you advise how to route traffic from the ADSL to the Proxy? The UTM is in place but traffic is not directed to it.

ADSL is 10.1.1.1 and the proxy is 10.1.1.32.

Your assistance is appreciated.

Hi,

Maybe you can do a DNAT on the router.

However, I strongly recommend you put the UTM/proxy INSIDE your LAN, and then use DHCP WPAD or manual browser settings to point the browsers to the Proxy.

Or get rid of the router and use the UTM only.

Ah,

Everything is plumbed into my ADSL 4 port router.
No switch. I could bite the bullet and purchase a switch and a second NIC.
Would definitely give more control...
