Replacing ASG220 with UTM220

Greetings- I have a stable ASG220 (firmware version 7.513) install and recently purchased a new UTM220 (version 9.105 2gb ram 1gb swap).

[Just fired up the UTM220 – boy are the two little fans loud!]

I have done the initial setup when a new unit is first started and have access to the dashboard now . . .

I’m asking for some guidance on how to best make the transition. I hope to be able to exchange out the old unit and just move my current configuration and settings to the new device. Any pitfalls to steer clear of or instructions would be much appreciated.

    Hi,

    Try importing a backup file to the new UTM and see what happens. It's supposed to 'just work'.

    Make sure the NICs are still in the expected order after loading the backup.


    I've had some problems with one configuration from 7.5x that has a LOT of NATs and additional IPs, where I wanted to delete the NATs and setup a new 1-1 NAT; it freaked out when I started deleting.

    I ended up using the SUM manager and was able to move defintions that way... a bit of work though.

    There's a slick solution that several of us here have used to retain logs and reporting. It's a little more work though...
    • Re-image the new UTM 220 with the latest ISO of the version on your old ASG 220: ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/ASG/v7/hardware_appliance/iso/ssi-7.511-120229-1.iso
    • Power down the new UTM
    • Configure the old ASG for Hot-Standby
    • Connect the new UTM 220 with Ethernet connections identical to the ASG 220 and connect the Sync interfaces with a crossover cable
    • Power up the new UTM 220.  The old ASG 220 will be the Master and will Up2Date the UTM 220 Slave to 7.513 (I don't think you have to do this manually with the first step).
    • After both 220s are at 7.513 and both show as ACTIVE in WebAdmin, do the Upgrade to V8 and Up2Date to 8.311
    • After both 220s are at V8.311 and both show as ACTIVE in WebAdmin, shut down the old ASG 220.  If it was the Master, this will cause the new UTM 220 to become the Master.  Disconnect the old ASG 220 and set it aside.
    • Now, you can do the Upgrade to V9 on the UTM 220 and Up2Date it to V9.106-17 (I don't yet recommend 9.107).

    Pleae let us know if I've made any mistakes in the above.

    Thanks for the replies - I  tried to import a backup from the ASG220 but it seemed to have stalled and after about 30 min, I had to power down.  I will try the ISO option next and report the results.

    It is recommended to reboot after importing a backup.

    Greetings - It has been a while since we received our new UTM 220 and have I not yet installed it.  Still running the ASG 220 and hope that I can get some additional help on the migration.

    Current setup:
    Currently using  the ASG 220 (firmware version 7.513) and purchased a new UTM 220 (version 9.105 2gb ram 1gb swap). 

    Issues on migration:
    UTM 220 does not seem to want to restore the backup file I created from the ASG 220. I have access to the UTM 220 dashboard  and there tried to restore the ASG 220  backup but the UTM-220 continues to time out  after many "Wait 30 more seconds to finish request"


    BarryG had a suggestion a while back in January which required a bit of work to accomplish in order to save logs, etc. but that is not critical for us at this time.  I am assuming that the jump from firmware v7 on the ASG 220 is too much for a simple restore option on the UTM 220 from a ASG 220 backup.
     
    I am hoping to keep the ASG 220 status quo so that if I run into any problems I can just plug it back in. 

    Any other suggestions?

    I was finally able to do a restore from the usb port after an initial system configuration. Starting up the device with USB drive inserted that contains  a backup file does a restore. So far it looks like all my definitions were transferred. I will report any new developments.
