Build my own small Astaro

Hi,

Do you have some experience on how to build a fan less small UTM for my home.
Can you help me to find the right equipment ?

I want buy or build something that can do this :

- Work FAN less.
- 3 NIC.
- One wireless access (it seems that UTM don't support PCI WiFi card).
- Work without keyboard and screen.
- Integrated ADSL modem (PCI or other).

Can you help me ?

Hi,

1. are you using the third nic for the wireless network or a dmz?

2. What is the speed of your internet connection, and do you expect it to increase significantly?

3. Budget?
High performance fan less systems are available but very expensive.

4. Any physical size requirements?

5. Does it have to be fanless or just very quiet?

6. If fanless, must it be sealed from dust, or is ventilated ok?

Thanks for your help.

- Maybe 4 NICs is better I need 1 for Internet, 1 for my DMZ, 1 for the WiFi and 1 for a switch or something else.

- Actually, the best speed that I can have on my ADSL is download 16Mb, upload 800Kb.

- I don't have an important budget.

- I don't want something to big and to noisy. The system will be in my living room.

- I want somethnig that isn't noisy, and that accepts future versions of UTM.

Hi, for 16mbps, an Atom CPU-based system would be ok.

I may have some multi-port systems bookmarked, I will check later.
Meanwhile, look on Logic Supply, they usually have a couple Jetway systems with 1 NIC + 3 NICs optional.

Also, you could try to get a Sophos UTM 120 appliance (and convert it to a home license)... Look on CDW or eBay.
Iirc, they are fanless.
Be sure to get a current model, and note they cannot take over 2gb RAM (which some users find too little).

If it's not too big, there's a few quiet mini-ITX cases available with room for a PCIe NIC.
One example wild be the Fractal Design Node 304.

Quad-port NICs are available for a few hundred USD, but I think I've seen some recently for closer to $100.

You could get an Atom board, or something such as one of the Gigabyte h87 or z87 based mini-itx boards, with a low-watt Haswell CPU.
Optionally, you could replace the Intel heatsink with a larger fan less one, and just use the Node 304's rear case fan on low speed.

I believe I've seen some of these NICs cheap.

Btw, most quad NICs run hot and need real airflow.

Intel and broadcom chips work best.

If you want 100mbps between your lan, dmz, and/or Wi-Fi, you'd need a faster CPU, or you could create IPS exceptions.

They seem to be made by the same company as the Compulab systems I posted earlier.

Supermicro has lots of nice boards, but they tend to be expensive. Here's an older board with 4 Intel NICs and a mobile i7 CPU, fanless:

Note that even though the board is fanless, the case must provide enough airflow, via fans, or possibly by convection (my fanless Atom system works via convection and lots of ventilation).

Intel D2500CC is an intel fanless Atom board 2x1,86 Ghz and included are already 2 intel nics. You can add a 2-port NIC for total of 4 nic's.
System is good for about 80-85 Mbps between LAN and DMZ (but if you disable IPS and/or webfiltering between the two (or only one way), you can easily get 100 (and more) Mbps.
