SW-Appliance: Installation hangs at 16%

Hi Folks,

I am a big huge astaro-fan ... and I would now like to move to the UTM9.
But no matter what version I try - the installation hangs at 16% (hw-detection -> storage device detection).

Downloaded from: ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/UTM/v9/software_appliance/iso/asg-9.100-16.1.iso and double-checked the md5-sum.

User HW:
Asus Eee Box B202 (Intel Atom N270 1,6GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Intel G945GSE)

Any hint on this? [:S]

PS: (ALT-F4) ErrMsg: part_get_disk: ped_device_get: failed

    Hi,
    It looks like it's having trouble reading the hard drive.

    1. nuke the partition table from the disk with a tool like dban (running it for just a few seconds should suffice)

    2. check what mode the HD controller is in (SATA, AHCI, ...) and the LBA mode. Try different options.

    3. make sure you have no more than one optical drive and one hard drive connected.

    thanks for the quick response ...
    1. i delete the partition-table with fdisk ... the error remains the same.
    2. ok - i will double-checked again. 
    3. i only have 2 attached drives ... /dev/sda (int. harddrive) and /dev/sdb (optical drive - installation media)

    and that is the point of irritates me: why the installer tries to access /dev/sdb (optical drive) ... and not on the hard disk (/dev/sda)?

    /dev/sd* is always a harddrive, optical drives have another naming scheme. So in fact you do have 2 hard disks in your system (or at least the installer detects 2). Might be that one of them is a SSD or anoher caching device, or just a plugged in SD card or USB device!?


    ok, I forgot to mention that the optical-drive is an external dvd-drive on usb [8-)] sorry!

    but it is not unusual for linux that the optical-drive (by the scsi emulation) was recognized als /dev/sd(x) devices...[:S]

    I had similar problems installing UTM 9. I stumbled upon a strange solution - not sure  if this will work for you. I first installed Ubuntu. For some reason, UTM installed fine over that, but wouldn't install over an existing UTM install.

    Might be that your opical drive has kind of a wrong device "id" or so. I never heard of UTM setup trying to install on an optical drive.

    I believe it would show as /dev/scd in scsi emulation.

    Hi, are you sure you deleted the whole partition table and not just the partitions?

    Astaro has had problems installing on drives with GPT partition tables; I'm not sure how to delete them with fdisk which is why I recommended dban or similar.

    If this turns out to be the problem, Sophos really needs to fix this; it's been a long time since GPT partition tables have been around.

    thank you @all for your support....

    now I know where that /dev/sdb comes from [:O]
    the mentioned pc has a built-in sd card-reader and the linux-installer recognizes thi as as a hard drive /dev/sdb.
    have not found any possibility to disable it in the bios. 

    Plugin'g in a sd-card prevents that the error message appears ... but the installer hangs at the storage detection anyway.

    I have to keep looking after the solution to fully disable the card-reader...
