Licensing of Active Passive Software

You are correct; to have a HA pair in Active/Passive mode, only 1 set of subscription licenses are required.  To get your other software box up ... when you do a clean install on the passive unit, you automatically have a grace period of 30 days, no license install needed.  Just add it to the HA master and voila you have your HA pair configured.  No further tinkering with licensing needed.

However, my reseller says "you HAVE to have premium Support when buying the Software". Is that true? Do I really need that? Kind of loweres the cost-advantage I have with the Software now.

Next question: I understand that I should connect all interfaces of both boxes with their corresponding network-switch. However I have one interface with an ADSL connection that uses a dsl-modem to connect to the Internet. How do I connect this to a second UTM? I can't use a sSwitch as it's a pppoe line.

Well, in the U.S. (and probably in Germany) you are not required to purchase Premium Support if you are licensing the Software Version.  It can make a difference in your support experience, though, if your reseller is a "box / license pusher" --- that is, they just sell the license and have no staff onboard that support their customers.   Standard Support (included in your other subscriptions) is available only through your reseller; per contract they are to take you support calls as a level 1 support team, and if they don't know the answer, they are to open a support case for you with Sophos Support (my company does this all the time).  Customers with Standard Support can't directly start a case with Sophos Support, except in special situations.  At least, that's how it works here...

We do recommend Premium Support even though we do have an excellent support group here in my company, just for the 24/7 access to Sophos Support ... many of our customers still call us first even though they have Premium Support, and we don't mind, that's part of our business model -- other companies may push premium support so they don't have to deal with their customers -- not saying that's the case with your reseller, but I've seen it happen that way.

As for your ADSL question --- I don't have any customers using HA that are using a PPPOE ISP in their config, so your guess is as good as mine -- I think you actually should be able to put the port from your modem / bridge into a VLAN on a switch, and connect the UTMs to that VLAN, and have it work, but I've never had to set that up.

For Germany this is not correct. We are running a Active/Passive-Cluster without premium support.
Maybe your reseller just doesn´t want to support this setup in case of a crash.

Just take a small switch and connect your 2 ASGs and the dsl-modem.
Works great.

Took your advice and just ordered a software license. Seems to be much more flexible and cheaper because I have so much spare Hardware. [:)]
