UTM Hardware?

Hello everybody

does anybody know, which for hardware the new utm100/110 appliances are? Or can somebody say, what hardware is needed to get a firewall thoughput which is higher than 150MBit/s?

    Hi Kilrathy,

    My understanding is the 100/110/120 are all based off the same hardware, namely the Intel Atom platform. Differences in capability are based on what license is chosen, (BasicGuard, Subscription, FullGuard) the hardware is fully capable of each.

    As for what platform will do in excess of 150Mbps, that really depends on how many users and what features you plan to enable. Marketing (lab testing) says a 120 w/ just the firewall can do 1.8 Gbps whereas the FullGuard is only rated @ 45Mbps. The 320 can do FullGuard @ 165Mbps.

    Real world results however will depend on your user count, enabled features, version of the software (v8 or v9. v9 has some teething problems) and other factors. For an accurate assessment, you need to speak with a Astaro/Sophos partner who can help you decide which platform is the correct one for you.

    Thanks for you reply, well as I can see, every UTM build from Sophos is too expensive for just using at home, so I want to build my own system. So there only two persons which are using the internet connection.

    As I am planning to upgrade my internet connection from 100 to 150mbit/s, I need some really fast hardware for handling this speed.

    Is a Intel Atom D510/D525 Board enough or do I need some more power like Core i3? Can someone give me some advice here? It's a really new challenge, as "normal" firewalls have mostly a max. throughput of about 100mbit/s.

    Hi, my dual-core Atom n270 can only do about 45mbps with only IPS and Application Detection enabled (and PacketFilter, which uses little CPU).

    I would NOT recommend any Atom for your use.

    A Ivy Bridge i3 should be fine, but if you are going to be using a lot of features, such as dual-scan A/V for http and/or email, and have a lot of simultaneous users, you might want to get a Quad-Core Ivy Bridge i5 for higher performance and future-proofing.

    Also, get at least 4GB of RAM, preferably 8GB if you are going to be using the http features.

    Also, when choosing a processor for your build, get more MHz if you can work it into the budget. On some of the processes running within the UTM, A/V for example, more cores means more simultaneous scan's but more MHz means each scan is faster.

    With only two users, more cores won't be as beneficial as more MHz.
