INFO - No ping reply for windows machines

Hi,

I have had a strange error state on my Astaro the last couple of days.

Thought I should share my findings.

Error: Windows machines (Vista, W7, and XP) do not get traffic through Astaro, and do not get reply to pings. At the same time linux hosts, and even VMWARE linux hosts on a W7 machine do get ping reply. They also have problems with traffic, but ta a minor degree.

Setup: 
Standard Ethernett - With the above errors, sporadic drop of service.
VLAN setup - OK

Error checking:
Almost everything. The fact that VMWARE machine, on a W7, managed to ping the FW. While at that very same time the W7 machine did not was ... [:S]

1. Changed to different network adapter - Still same error
2. Changed to a new network adapter - Still same error
3. Reinstalled the Astaro to the new UTM 9 - Still same error
4. Started having bad thoughts about it beeing the switch, changed - Still same error.
5. Back to looking at the FW, ... 

Solution:
Powersupply error. Checked the voltages. They were out of spec. Changed powersupply. All OK.

Still do not know why, .... but thought it could be a nice thing to share. [:)]

    I also would suggest checking your power outlets for floating ground and reversed polarity.

    Just out of curiosity: Why would reversed polarities on an AC circuit have any effect?

    I think, like a floating ground, that it can cause a difference in potential that causes current to flow between two devices connected via an Ethernet cable.  Ever since I got a shock when I touched a customer's computer in his office years ago, I carry one of those little plug-in testing things in my kit.

    Hi,

    fwiw, I've seen powersupplies which badly leak AC voltage into the chassis. This can lead to all kinds of problems, as well as being a health hazard.

    Reversed polarizations are bad if you don't also have a good ground connection, or if the equipment does not use the ground pin and relies on the (possibly incorrect) polarization of the plug to ground.

    Many UPS's and good power strips (APC) will show a red light if there is a ground fault, but the ones I've seen don't test polarization.

    As Bob says, you can also get a plug-in tester; they are about $6USD. They're very useful if you ever need to replace an old outlet.

    They will tell you if the polarization is reversed, ground is bad, etc.

    The wikipedia article also mentions some additional tests that can be done with a lamp and a voltmeter.

    Hi,

    The hardware is behind a APC Online UPS, on a AC 230V net. No grounding or voltage issues, other than dropouts.

    I can understand how floating ground can be a issue. Reverse polarity on a AC is not something I understand.... Should not a AC have alternating polarities at 50Hz by default?

    Here's a good explanation.  Reverse polarity shouldn't cause a problem with electronic devices unless there's an electrical connection (like an Ethernet cable) between a device connected to an outlet with reversed polarity and one with correct polarity.

    Sorry, POLARIZATION is what I meant to say, not polarity.

    I'm not sure which other countries have them, but if hooked up correctly, and the appliance has a polarized plug, they are supposed to guarantee a grounded chassis on the appliance.
