Astaro ASG220 Rev2 vs Sophos UTM120

Hi,

Does anyone know the CPU specification of the old Astaro ASG220 Rev2 (with the Astaro 512MB RAM upgrade to 1GB).

I need to connect a new office and I'm wondering if I'm better off bringing an old ASG220 out of retirement to run UTM9, or would I be better of buying a new Sophos UTM120.

Basically, which is the more powerful device?.

Thanks!

  • Astaro ASG220 Rev2 (with the Astaro RAM upgrade to 2GB).  Now if the old 220 is an atom then my whole missive is out the door..then yes a 320(or custom hardwre is my reccomendation with caveats) is going to be the way to go..[:)]  BUT according to this thread the old 220 has a 2.8 ghz p-4 and the atom isn't going to handle the ips load anywhere near as well as that p-4.  IPS is a single threaded killer and the only way to make that go fast is high raw clockspeed..Internal IPC efficiencies can help in modern cpus but again it's raw clockspeed for single threaded and/or serialized data loads...something the atom doesn't have..also the atom is geared towards threaded processes..something ips does NOT do.  also a/v scanning is highly serial in nature and again only raw clock speed can get around that.  in these two areas advantage p-4 by a mile.  The only way to get around it is custom hardware with a fast DC pentium or core cpu.  I would not recommend AMD in a custom box as this time as they are relaly nothing more than atoms on steroids with the same types of limitations.

  • William, Astaro never had an official RAM upgrade program that upgraded a 220 to 2GB of RAM... I think that's the point you are missing.  They had a RAM upgrade program that took 512MB devices up to 1GB.

You can upgrade some of the older ASG220 units to 2GB, some you can't... but if you upgrade one without official Sophos Support sanctioning it, you run the risk of voiding your support agreements.
