9.0 with one cpu?

It will probably install on any x686-compatible CPU.

Webadmin, contentfilter / antivirus, and the IPS will perform poorly with older CPUs

no problem then, my internet connection and ammount of clients are far too slow/few that the bottleneck will be there not on the UTM (and i'm only using content filter for a small lab subset)

I've currently got it running on an old dell precision 2400 with 2GB of ram and it runs a lot better that I originally thought it would.  Keeps up fine with the 30MB broadband, but I don't run IPS as I suspect this would kill it.  AV, web and app filtering are all turned on though and Web Admin is still fairly snappy.

IPS works at up to about 40mbps on a single-core Intel Atom CPU.

Some PIII's may be able to compete with that (they made some 1.2GHz PIII's).
Anything more modern should be OK.

But, of course if A/V and other things are using the CPU, ymmv.

It's an age-old Athlon XP with 1.5GB of RAM
heh 40mbps is an order of magnitude more than the BW we have over here, and with 8.3 i never see more than 10% CPU use

If 8.3 is working great for you, then 9.x should be OK too.
Save a config backup, just in case.

Excellent, i need to upgrade to 9.0 simply because of the DHCP options, as right now i can't pixie boot an antire lan segment because the dhcp server is in the Astaro box

P4, 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM. Not a lot of load, but graphs show almost no load.
