I have to agree with Bob that you were most likely undersized for your environment.  For example, with all features enabled, a 220 is rated for 70-75 users max.

Now, as far as features and development goes, you don't specify the features that you were looking for, so I can't speak to specifics.  Product management determines the features that will be added in a given major release.  Then development goes to town on the coding.  Those two groups along with sales, marketing, and management all chime in on a target release date.  The final true release date may be pushed back for any of several reasons, chief among them being issues discovered during external beta or internal QA.  I personally would rather see a release come out late than have something released with known major issues or announced new features stripped out.

70-75 users? With only 1GB or RAM? With all features enabled? NO WAY!
We have only 40 users and had to disable 'dual scan' (and a lot of other things) to keep the system running smoothly. Once RAM and SWAP are over 85%, performance is degrading.

The problem is the RAM. Only 1GB of RAM. What are we talking about? That's the amount of smartphones today. And now V9 is coming out, they say for a 220 'Not recommended'. One year old... If I look around wheter it is possible to upgrade RAM, I see a lot of links refering to Astaro. It seems like those days it was possible. Nowadays (Sophos, American, managment, marketing, warranty void & money) there is little or no info.

PS: My laptop is over 6 year old and still running smoothly: more RAM and SSD.

PPS: If someone starts legal actions, let me know.

Nevertheless, the statement is clear and everybody should be aware of is: don't buy these devices (220, don't know about the other) as they are not designed for a decent/recent UTM. However, it is an interesting product as not all people have the skills to setup their own server and install the software version.
As you say, 2GB is minimum.

I'm sorry you are having trouble too.  It's nice to know I'm not the only one struggling with this despite what Astaro account representatives will probably tell you.  Please let me know how it goes.  

Voiding the warranty is not my call, I'm not sure I would even recommend that.  I'm still hopeful that my ASG 220s can handle the update when it finally comes out.  Basically, all the ASGs are doing now is basic Firewall, VPN, and Content Filtering.  Before I would consider voiding the warranty I would probably propose replacing them with an alternative or at least offloading the content filtering.  I would be very surprised if these can't support just Firewall and VPN in v9.  I really hope I will not need to completely replace these devices mid-year.
