GA vs. softrelease

I've notices that UTM 9.000 is now released as a soft release. What are the main differences between a soft release and the final GA release? Is the soft release considered beta quality or is it suitable for production environments?

I don't feel like loosing all of the logs at all of my clients...i'll wait for the v8-v9 upgrade path..[:)]
