Moving from Software to Hardware(320)

Hello Follks,

We have been running ASG software for at least 5 years now. We run the software ASG product running on Dell a 2950(250 users) .  Our company will be shortly acquiring a new company so I suddenly now need to manage several new remotes sites on a managed MPLS from my provider. I now need to increase license count at HQ(because some of these remote sites wont have ASG units at them since connections wll be coming in directly to remote plants switch.

It's appearing that it's going to be cheaper for me to go with a 320  with unlimited users at the HQ  with  full package bundle enabled then it is to increase my user count on our ASG software.  

So my question is, if I purchase a single 320, can I use the backup config file to restore to my current 2950 Dell server running ASG software in case of emergency?  I have a feeling the restore will work(with perhaps renumbering some of the interfaces), but I know I wont be able to use a hardware license from the backup config of the 320 on the software version of the product.  Can I limp by on a trial license while I wait for a RMA 320 unit to come back?

    Hi, if the Dell has as many (or more) network interfaces than are configured on the 320, the backup file should work.

    A trial license would probably work, but you should check with your reseller.

    ISTM that Astaro needs to offer some sort of priority hardware replacement. That was the main reason I've been using HP hardware instead; with HP I can have the server fixed or replaced within 6 hours (6-hour CTR; note this is better than a 4-hour response contract).

    Why not just pick up a spare unlicensed 320 or run the spare in HA mode with proper licenses?  

    For a 250+ company, the cost of another 320 pales in comparison to the lost productivity and headaches of the network being down for even 2-4 hours while manually getting everything to switch over to a different type of hardware all together.

    With the new licensing model came the possibility to run a second device in "Hot-Standby" for no additional cost except for the Premium Support subscription for the second box.

    Barry, just curious, have you compared the cost of duplicating the DL360G5 and the DL145 (and NICs) in Hot-Standby to the 6hr-CTR renewal cost?

    Hi Bob,

    I haven't, but iirc, the savings of reducing the 6-hour CTR to 4-hour would probably be $200-300 / year, and maybe another $100-200 savings for NBD.

    The 360 was leftover from another project, but a new one would probably be around $4000.

    Something else I'd like to point out WRT Astaro Appliances vs other hardware: afaik, the Astaro appliances don't have RAID and dual power supplies.
    I have the HP 360 configured with hot-spare memory too.

    We sell a lot of HP servers and lots of Care Packs, and those numbers sound right to me.  And, you're right about that 360 having redundant power supplies - I trust you have each one hooked to a different UPS and different circuit.  In our old building, we even had the second circuit coming from a different transformer.

    I was just thinking that a similarly configured DL360G5 off-lease would be under $500 on eBay and that the 6hr-CTR is about $900/yr.

    Yes, our co-lo ISP has us on separate UPS's. They 'forgot' to do so when we first got setup, and we had to pay extra for them to fix it.

    You're right that servers are really cheap on eBay. My employer doesn't believe in buying things that way, but I've helped friends setup used servers.

    $900 sounds a little high though... I thought it was around $550.
