Crashes in Hyper-V VM

I also investigated this problem a bit further...as my ASG was up about 1 week without any issues, today during a big download it crashed again. At that time I was connected via L2PT from External and working on my Server 2008 R2 via Remote Desktop.

As the RDP connection to the server was lost and no ping gets answered, I still was dialed in on the VPN connection to the ASG. I also could ping the ASG so the External connection on the external virtual switch seemed ok. I then pinged a few servers in my DMZ. They also responed, so the virtual switch for the DMZ seems also OK. Only the Internal virtual Switch was broken.

I let this issue in this stage and back at my place I investigated it a bit further. So from my PC I could ping the Server 2008 R2 but no VM wich was connected to the Internal virtual switch.

So this case is clear that in my case it seems that it is not a direkt ASG issue. However I don't know why this problem occures because all NICs are the same.

To solve this, I replaced all NICs with Intel NICs and now I'm quite excited if that is the sollution.

But I want to make this clear: It seems that somehow the virtual switch from Hyper-V gets broken, what I don't know is why. It seems that Astaro is fine at that time, but maybe Astaro is still the cause of the problem because of shitty Hyper-V drivers which cause this virtual switch crash.

Hope I could help you uys, will report back in a few weeks if the problem is solved with NIC replacing.

well i can tell you it's IS astaro specific because i have full gig-e for server 2k8 file server and i routinely max that sucker out transferring huge files...without an issue..it's only the astaro that pukes

Are you guys able to try out ASG v9 in Hyper-V? v9 has the new Linux 3.3 kernel which takes advantage of Microsoft patches that were merged in mainline.

first: no crash since nic replacing and massiv bandwidth improvement, I really lerned what good nics can do!

second: of course upgrading to V9 is an option, and will be done when it is final. I tried out the beta and it was smooth in Hyper-V, however the testingtime was to short, so that I'm not really able to tell if this issue is fixed in V9.
But since V8 is supported for Hyper-V and there are costumers who run this setup and don't want to be forced or unable to upgrade to V9, this issue should still be investigated!

Upgrades are often a solution, but when a product is supported for the common setup, there should be fixes or if no fix will be released, a free upgrade for those should be available.

Also a company can't just say "oh yeah this setup is supported, but it does not work. it works with the new version, so maybe you want to upgrade for only $$$$". This is ridiculous, and sounds like Adobe [:P]

So, you should love Astaro - upgrades are free!  A company with any paid licensing also can get automatic downloads of the Up2Date files.  If only the Essential Firewall is in use, the Admin must load the files manually.

i've experienced this along with other regressions in the betas.  At least the v8.3 vm's have the known network issues..[:)]

I've tested with v9 now. Can't reproduce the issue any more.

So today was the day, my Astaro died again. So NIC replacing didn't sort this issue. However it was a little different this time.

The last time it seemed that the Hyper-V virtual Switch for the internal network crashed somehow because i couldn't ping any virtual server witch was connected to it. This time when my Internet connection got broken I could ping server on the internal vswitch. Beside I couldn't ping servers in the dmz which are also connected to the ASG VM but through an separat vswitch. But dmz servers also couldn't connect to the internet and weren't able to ping internal servers (icmp forwarding is enabled on the asg). Last thing is, that I was't able to ping the asg from extern on my WAN uplink. 

So this time the whole asg crashed but the vswitches itself weren't affected.
In my opinion, this resets the case to an issue in Astaro. Please investigate in this problem, need a fix! (Thinking about a second asg VM in HA standby [8-)] )


On the side my utm9 beta vm runs still smooth. And for those who experience the crashes with broken vswitches, maybe the solution is to delete and recreate them in the hyper-v network manager.

I'm seeing this also with Astaro on Hyper-V. This happened to me today with 8.305. At least once a week I lose all connectivity with my internal interface and need to reboot the VM through the console to get it working again. External interfaces continue to work and I'm even able to login in Webmin through external link, but internally I get no response whatsoever. I have two more VMs sharing the same virtual switch and they continue to respond to network requests normally, so this is restricted to Astaro somehow. I've searched the logs over and over, but absolutely nothing suspicious get reported. 

Is there a open ticket about this issue somewhere?
