All in all I am afraid of driver problems. And additional to this I would like to know if I can really increase performance by using a SixCore CPU or more than 4 GBytes of RAM.

Check the HCL once it comes back online.  Astaro only contains a limited set of approved drivers and you cannot add your own.  As far as performance goes, Astaro does support multi-core and multi-threading, so yes more cores can give better performance, but much of it depends on how much traffic is passing through the box.  Six-cores does seem to be overkill for a network devices though.  My main production box has most features enabled and passes anywhere from 350GB-500GB per month and with an older 3.2Ghz Pentium4 and rarely goes over 20% CPU and then only for brief periods or when installing an up2date package.  As far as RAM goes, as long as you choose 64-bit during installation, and your chipset supports 64-bit, you'll be able to use more RAM.  Same thing about overkill applies here.  The biggest appliance that Astaro makes, the 625, designed for massive enterprises and datacenters, only has 8GB in it.

What may be more efficient with the "monster" box specs in the box you are putting together is to install VMWare ESX or MS Hyper-V Server bare-metal hypervisor (Citrix XenServer is not currently fully supported, but this is coming) onto the hardware, the run Astaro as a VM.  Then you can add other VM's onto the box and not waste idle resources.
